08/07/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/07/17 17:42 River is a white and brown dog who was found outside by herself after approaching the finder and following her home. She is approaches strangers that come over but is friendly. She nipped the ear of the 3 year old nephew when he visited but the nature of the nip was unknown and not winessed by finders. She is house trained to go outside. She is not bothered by having her food touched or takenShe is not bothoered by being bathed and did not bark when the doorbell rings and just whimpers. River had her tail tucked between her legs and gave counselor whale eyes. When counselor approached her with scanner she alligator rolled to get away and also growled at counselor. River flinched when touched but after some time was comfortable with being next to counselor and being pet.
08/10/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Before I met River, I was told that she was very timid. This is always a thing good to know before interacting with a dog or a cat. River came to her door as I called her and got leashed without effort. She ignored the barking of her kennelmates as we exited her room and aimed for the street. River pulls a little on the leash and does her business right way. Her tail is not shy and wags more and more as our encounter continues. It is really in the yard, leash free, that River comes out of her shell and flashes a beautiful smile and laughing eyes. I call her a “bench girl” as it seems to be her favorite place to be, by my side or behind me, licking my neck. While she showed discomfort in playgroups with her peers, River seemed to enjoy a timid male eying her and bowing to her in an adjacent pen. She can sit on command and comes when I call her. River is a gorgeous dog, long legged, trim, well groomed and elegantly dressed in her cream and mocca coat. Although she has shown unease with the ups and downs that recently marked her life, River is capable to bond and enjoy the presence of humans and dogs who are easy going and friendly or understanding of her predicament. I know there is hope for River. It is just a matter of believing in her and giving her a chance. River is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center.
08/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 8/7/17 Unaltered Female, Stray (With finder for one week) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Bite history: Yes, River nipped the ear of the three-year-old child who visited the finder. No skin was broken. Housetrained: Yes SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/9/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: River was very tense and fearful during her behavior assessment. She had a tense body and moved away from the assessor, focusing on the exit. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing, defensive posturing, or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. PLAYGROUP: River has been fearful and avoidant when introduced to dogs in the care center. Due to overall discomfort and fearful behavior observed, the behavior department recommends allowing River a period of decompression before immediate introductions to other dogs. Future introductions should be supervised, and conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, River had a tucked tail and whale eyes. She growled at the counselor but after some time allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/8/17 During her initial medical exam, River was tense and growled. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on River so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: River has allowed all handling at the shelter and has warmed up to approach by all staff after a short period of decompression. She has also shown highly social behavior with select handlers that she has connected with. She will seek attention and pets by shoulder rubbing and jumping in the laps of these handlers and enjoying all interaction with them. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable River is at the care center, as well as her history of nipping a child in the finder’s home, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: River nipped a child in the finder’s home and appears very fearful at the care center. She has shown she will warm up to handlers given time and patience, but is at first fearful and avoids contact. River gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with River, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow River to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
