09/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Shy and uncertain, Riley has nonetheless been well taken care of physically; his gorgeous cocoa color coat is clean and groomed, his weight is perfect for his size and he may be housetrained, as he went potty the moment we were out the door. Riley was found by a good Samaritan. He’s so docile, walking quietly on leash by my side, not reacting to anything or anybody we pass, including other dogs. We stopped to take some pictures, Riley’s ears perking up when I squeaked a toy. Sitting together, he let me pet him, pushing his head into my hand, and eventually lay his head on my knee. One small step at a time. I know that with the love of a person and/or family, Riley will come out of his shell; he’s a puppy who deserves and needs to romp and love like one. He needs to live “the life of Riley”, as the expression goes, an ideal life, an easy life, a life filled with promise. Will you be the person with patience and a heart filled with love to give Riley his happily ever after? A volunteer updates: What a joy it is to see excruciatingly shy Riley from three days ago, now out with a volunteer in the park, enjoying being petted, wagging his tail gently and giving a soft kiss. My heart sings to see the strides he’s made. And, not only that, he’s a volunteer helper dog, used to train new volunteers how to leash and walk dogs. Not bad for a dog who wasn’t sure of himself — he now has an important job!! His posture is no longer fearful, he’s learning that people give pets, and treats, and hugs and nice walks. Imagine how well he’ll do in a home with that kind of gentle love. We’re rooting for you Riley!!
His foster writes: Riley is a sweet, affectionate and mellow fellow. He loves nothing more than to hang out at home with you. If you wander off to another room for too long, he will join you. Didn’t hear him come in? He is so quiet at home that his nickname is Ninja Puppy. But there is no hiding his love for attention, and he will occasionally come over just to say “hi”, putting his head on your leg for a petting, or putting his front legs on either side of you for a giant hug. But watch out; sometimes he rolls on his back, letting you know that what he really wants is a belly rub. Then it is back to dreamland; he is so cute when his legs move and he makes soft little noises when totally zonked out. Riley got along with my two older cats. When they first met he tried some introductory sniffs, but after that he left them alone. He isn’t even bothered by the occasional hiss or by a cat trying to sneak a bite of his dog food. Cat blocking his way? He’ll carefully step over him.Riley has a rope and a soft cat toy he occasionally chews on, but so far efforts to teach him “fetch” have failed. Toys are his way of showing he is happy and content; when you get up in the morning or come home he grabs a toy and runs around with it in his mouth, his tail wagging so furiously you’d think he hadn’t seen you in days. Riley would be happy to hang out with you on the sofa, if you want the company. Prefer that he doesn’t get on the furniture? No problem, Riley is so polite that a “no” or two will quickly teach him that he is not allowed up there. Riley was found as a stray, but he clearly got a lot of training. However, the job is not quite done. Riley gets overexcited when he sees other dogs while out walking on his leash, and doesn’t really know how to behave around them. He has been learning that remaining calm will earn him liver treats, but he will need someone to continue working with him on that. Like every dog he is happy to get out and sniff all those great smells out there, and while in foster he got a two-mile walk every morning.
08/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Riley is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Riley had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Riley is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Riley is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. playgroup notes: When off leash with other dogs Riley will only sniff when the helper dog approaches. He otherwise stands, with a tense body, in one location throughout the interaction.
08/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION

8/26: When off leash with other dogs Riley will only sniff when the helper dog approaches. He otherwise stands, with a tense body, in one location throughout the interaction. He arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. The behavior team feels that NAME should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on his/her behavior around them.
