01/17/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/17/17 16:19 Basic Information Rico is a three year old neutered American Pit Bull Terrier. He is being surrendered because of a pregnancy and allergies. Surrendering party stated Rico has a very high activity level and likes to play a lot. He has lived around kids of all ages and is playful around them. He plays in a somewhat rough manner because he is big and clumsy stated the surrendering party. Rico has bitten someone back in April of 2016. Rico does not display any signs of aggression towards people he knows but may snap at people he does not know. Behavior during Intake Rico did not tolerated touch by the admissions counselor. When I was scanning him for a microchip her snapped at the scanner. From that moment on I did not attempt to handle this pet. The surrendering party helped with the picture and got his weight. The surrendering party needed help snapping our ID collar on and when I attempted to help, Rico bit my hand. The bite did not break skin.

Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 1/20/2017 Summary: At the care center Rico avoids being touched, stiffening when he is reached for. Due to the nature of Rico’s bites, running after people to bite them and biting the admissions counselor when touched, along with his avoidance of touch by staff, he is not a candidate for an assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 1/20: Rico is loose and playful with a female, offering bows and jumping on her. He does, however, tense and become aroused when she falls down and rolls onto her back. Rico remains uncomfortable with handling–tensing and quickly turning each time a handler attempts to collar him. He also will shift his focus quickly on handlers any time they move in the pen while he is interacting on-leash with a female dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/18/17 During his initial medical examination, Rico was tense, growled, and resisted handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Rico’s multiple bite history, we recommend an adult-only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Rico’s bite history and discomfort with interaction at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training for Rico. More aversive methods are likely to increase fear and aggression.
