08/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Angel Face” is a song written by Roy Orbison and sung by many of the rock ‘n roll greats, and while the lyrics of the song may not apply to this little meatball, his more than adorable face brought the title immediately to my mind. He’s a compact grey and tan low rider, probably housetrained, nicely groomed (ears clean, nails trimmed) and thrilled to be out of his kennel for a walk. Ricky pulls towards dogs as we walk, keeps an eye on the birds and wags his tail gently as we go. He didn’t like either of my treat offerings, but was happy to drape himself in my lap for some petting and cuddles. Ricky tilts his head when I make kissy sounds at him — and that always makes me swoon! Happy to make new friends, he’s easy to be with, and I can see the wheels turning in his head as he tries to make sense of his new situation. Not a fan of his kennel, as I put him back I promised we’d do our best to find him a new home. Will you help me keep my promise to him? Ask to meet him when you visit.
Another volunteer writes: A mini tank in a grey and tan coat….there’s simply no other way to put it. He loves a butt scratch, comes when called, is always interested in what’s going on around him, and loves making new friends. He needs some training to be a better walker on leash, and funnily enough, when off leash, he sits to be leashed….so he must have had some training. Maybe he just needs a bit of polishing. His adorable little face and tank-like body turn the sourest face into a big smile–you just can’t help yourself. Yes, he’s that cute!
08/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ricky came to the care center as a stray so we have no history of him in a home. Upon intake, he allowed all handling. For his relief walk, Ricky pulls hard on leash. Once in the assessment room, he appeared friendly and social. His eyes are averted during Look, body neutral. For Sensitivity, Ricky had a neutral body, and he was panting, tail low and wagging. During Tag, he followed playful, body loose. He did not pull back his paw on either Squeeze attempt. He displayed minimal interest in the Toy, sniffing it. When greeting the female dog through the gate, Ricky barks. He is muzzled for safety. Once off the leash, Ricky greets the helper dog briefly but then become distracted by the muzzle. The Behavior Team recommends that Ricky be placed in an Average home. As he has no known history with children, an in depth interaction is recommended for any children in the home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, playful. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog sniffs toy. Dog to Dog: When greeting the female dog through the gate, Ricky barks. He is muzzled for safety. Once off the leash, Ricky greets the helper dog briefly but then become distracted by the muzzle.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
8/23: Ricky sniffs the female greeter through a gate, and becomes tense, begins to bark when greeting lingers. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Ricky is initially sexually motivated, then begins to enagge in play. Ricky arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior will translate into a home setting. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while in our care. The behavior team feels that Ricky should have a pre-adoption interaction and slow introductions before immediate placement with a resident dog. R 8/27: Ricky engages in play with another playful dog, and is tolerant of vocal, mouthy play.
