A volunteer writes: In hindsight, I should have known right away that Ricky was a puppy! I hadn’t checked his card for his age, but his wiggly bottom and goofy personality was a dead giveaway. At 60 pounds, he is a thick, stocky boy, but his pink nose and asymmetrical stripe down his face give him a softness that signals his gentle side. When outside, Ricky could not contain his excitement for being out in the snow and did jump on me quite a bit. He was easy to redirect and with treats he will show you he knows how to “sit” on command. Ricky was surrendered to our care because his owner was no longer able to care for him. In his previous home, he is described as affectionate and playful with the 2 small children he lived with. He likes to play tug games with rope toys, doesn’t guard his food or toys, is housebroken and behaves when left alone. For such a young puppy, he already has an etiquette that some adult dogs don’t even have yet! Still, Ricky is ready to meet a family that can make him an even better dog than he already is! Ask to meet him today!
Behavior:
Ricky has begun demonstrating some food guarding behavior over food items (food bowl, Kong) in his kennel. This is in line with what his previous owner reported about his behavior in the home. While he lived previously with two small children, and got along well with them, due to his potential to guard food items we are recommending a home without children, and experienced adopters comfortable with safely managing and positively modifying the behavior should it be seen in his future home.
2/10 SAFER:
Ricky previously lived 4 adults and 2 small children. The owner stated Ricky is affectionate and playful with the children. The owner mentioned Ricky is house broken and well behaved when home alone. It was reported that Ricky does not guard his food from the previous owner but has growled at other family members if they get to close while he is eating. It was also stated by the owner Ricky may attempt to chase squirrels on his walks.
At intake it was reported Ricky was friendly and he was loose for all handling. During SAFER Ricky came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly, playful and attention seeking towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Ricky was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Ricky was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner, Ricky may growl when other family members come close to him while he is eating. The behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed.
Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Ricky met a soft, playful female today and loosened up and followed her throughout the pens and engaged in bouncy, chase play.
Group Behavior:
Ricky greets with a very loose, wiggly body and a giant play bow however once inside the pen he immediately curls up his body and lowers his head but remains soft and wiggly. It appears that Ricky has had very little interaction with other dogs and lacks proper social and play skills. Overtime he does loosen up and engages in bouncy, chase play with several dogs. He is a little overwhelmed at first, obsessively lip-licking one of the dogs but he eventually is able to interact confidently. Due to his behavior in playgroup, the Behavior Department feels that Ricky is suitable for a home with dogs of any age or temperament.
Ricky has had very little interaction with other dogs and lacks proper social and play skills. He does remain engaged with the helper dog and follows her when she runs away. Ricky is very confident and affiliative when interacting with the handlers though.
2/08 update: Ricky met a soft, playful female today and loosened up and followed her throughout the pens and engaged in bouncy, chase play.
2/17 update: Ricky greets with exhuberant wiggles. He does not engage in play but becomes overly appeasing, lip licking the helper dog to the point where she hopped onto the bench to avoid him.
2/18 update:Ricky engages in bouncy, chase play with two females. He is a little overwhelmed at first, obsessively lip-licking one of the dogs but he eventually is able to interact confidently.
