A staff member writes: Rice is just about happiest dog her tail never stops wagging!!!! She loves to frolic and play stopping every now and then to give us kisses. Rice also walks very well on leash and is friendly with the other dogs. Rice is on the small side, barely weighing 50 pounds, Rice has a pristine white coat with the cutest faint black speckles on her ears which makes her simply irresistible. Rice is a great dog looking for a great home. If you are interested in adopting Rice please come to Animal Care Centers and meet her
BEHAVIOR :
Rice came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray. Finder stated he took Rice home for one night, she was very gentle around Finder’s baby. Rice was friendly upon intake, soliciting attention from staff, but became fearful of microchip scanner, backed away growling and barking. She became nervous of noise in the hallway, body low. Once comfortable, Rice warmed up and was very friendly and sociable. She walked well on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. Rice approached assessor and licked assessor’s face upon entering SAFER assessment area. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging. Rice leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth, fast wagging tail. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Rice gently pulled her paw back on first Squeeze attempt, no pull back on second. She displayed brief bursts of interest with Toy, but quickly lost focus. Rice approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears back, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Rice would do well with an Average adopter. She may benefit initially by meeting her new family in a quiet place where she can approach and solicit attention as loud noises seem to make her uncomfortable. When relaxed, Rice appears to be a friendly, sociable dog that would make a nice family pet.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed
Toy 1. Brief bursts of engaging play, quickly loses interest.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Rice is polite when greeting and often solicits play to male dogs. She offers appropriate corrections to pushy males and engages in brienf bouncy play.
5/19 update : Rice continues to be polite, submissive and playful when greeted by new dogs. When in the yard with a familiar dog, Rice was very uncomfortable with an exuberant male and offered corrections when he solicited play.
5/20 update : Rice was loose and wiggly when off leash with two male dogs, one her size and one smaller dog. She appeared stiff when a dog would approach to sniff her but did not offer a correction. When the small dog approached her face she growled an snapped at him but did not escalate. Rice would often solicit handlers attention.
