03/15/16 14:00 03/15/16 14:00 Basic info: Rhubarb is a 6 year old pit bull mix. He is the son of Buddha The former owner brought Buddha to MACC because she could no longer care for him. Socialization: Rhubarb is a playful guy. It takes him a few minutes to get comfortable. He is playful Once he is familiar he can be tolerant of children but it may be best for him to go to a home without kids. Rhubarb was very comfortable with Buddha and pretty comfortable with most other dogs. He does not like cats. Behavior History: This dog has never bitten another animal or person. He is very well house trained and will let you know when he needs to go out. During thunder storms or fireworks he doesn’t seem to be bothered. If someone touches his food bowl while he is eating he might growl. He does enjoy geting baths. He was normally walked at least three times a day so his need for nail trims was few and far between. If someone comes close to him or a family member he might bark or even growl. For a new family to know: Rhubarb is described as playful affectionate and energetic. His activity level is pretty high but he loves to nap after a good play time sesh. When his owner is home he likes to be in the same room most of the time. He love almost any toy you put in front of him. He has been kept indoors mostly. This dog eats wet and dry food. When he is left alone at home Rhubarb is very well behaved. He has not been crated in years but he is crate trained. He knows how to sit on command. Rhubarb does pull on his leash. He will stay close to his owner. He is a great dog and he needs a great home! Behavior during intake: This dog was shy at first. He did allow me to collar him with no problem. He did not sit that well for his photo. He seemed nervous. He kept backing away and looking around.

03/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rhubarb’s previous owner notes that he is comfortable with most other dogs. However, the owner advises that while Rhubarb is tolerant of children he should go to a home without kids, and also a home without cats. Rhubarb has no bite history but is reported to show mild food bowl guarding behavior, growling if his bowl is touched while eating. He may also growl at strangers when they approach. Rhubarb’s previous owner describes him as playful, affectionate, and energetic with a high activity level. He was hesitant to interact with the counselor at intake, but he allowed handling for his medical examination. Unfortunately Rhubarb does not appear to be acclimating well to the shelter environment or to his new caretakers, and he did not allow handling for the SAFER aggression assessment. 3/18 SAFER: Rhubarb pulls a bit on the leash. He did not show any social behavior Rhubarb attempted to get away from the handler. When the assessor tries to approach him He was very still and rigid. Rhubarb was difficult to handle lunging forward at the assessor with no contact. The behavior team decided to place him back in his kennel. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Rhubard is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Rhubarb enters the pen with low, fearful body language. He becomes tense and “whale-eyed” when approached and sniffed by the female helper dog.
