05/12/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/12/17 16:24 Rhodes is a 7 year old male red Staffordshire that was purchased from a breeder 7 years ago. Owner surrendered Rhodes because he is moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. Owner is not aware of any injuries or health problems. Around strangers, Rhodes is very playful and friendly. He will jump up on people and forget all his manners. He has lived with children, ages 7 and 12, and would allow them to play with his ears, pull his tail, and lay on top of him. He is very excited during play with children and adults and will jump and run into people. He has not lived with any dogs but has lived with a male cat. He was relaxed and playful around the cat. he has not bitten or scratched another animal or person. Rhodes gets excited over strangers and anything in general and is a bit hard to control on a collar and leash. He isn’t bothered with thunder storms or other loud noises. He is not bothered by having his bowls touched, taking away toys or treats from his mouth, being restrained, or having his feet touched. He will bark at people when he is in the backyard. Rhodes is an affectionate, playful, and friendly dog that loves to be with his family and play with his tire toy. He was fed dry food once a day and is house trained. On his walks, he prefers to use the bathroom on either cement or grass. He pulls very hard on his walks and is hard to control but he has only been walked with a collar and leash.
05/21/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rhodes started breaking the record for charming the most amount of people in the shortest amount of time as soon as he arrived at the shelter. He is the SMILING dog! While his toothy submissive grins might be gone in a flash, he leaves a lasting impression. He is a big guy but has been easy to handle on leash, he seems very housebroken, and he knows “sit” and “down.” He’s very wiggly, happy and exuberant (in the words of his previous owner, he gets so excited to meet new people he “forgets all of his manners”). He’s done well with other dogs in our playgroups (he prefers play that involves minimal body contact), has previously lived with children (he let them lay on top of him!), and was even relaxed and playful with the resident CAT! He loves to play with toys and sprawl out like a frog when he needs a break. Plus he’s SO cute that he’s gotten catcalls from people in cars as we make our way down the block. Rhodes is at Brooklyn ACC and ready to bring his infectious joy to your place!

PLAYGROUP: When off leash off the Care Center, Rhodes is social with male and female dogs, and may engage in very gentle play that involves minimal body contact. According to Rhode’s previous owner, he did not interact with other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Rhodes be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/12/17 Rhodes Likes to smile, is very friendly, and allowed handling during his initial exam. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner describes Rhodes as an energetic, enthusiastic dog. Rhodes displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment; we recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Rhode’s threshold for arousal has been observed to be low and his escalation rapid, so we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced foster home and consultation with a behaviorist to address safety concerns before placement into an adoptive home. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Rhodes has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression (snapping and growling.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Rhodes to new and unfamiliar situations.
