06/17/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/17/16 12:33 Rex is a seven year old black and white American Pitbull mix. He was surrendered by owner due to a new baby in the home. Owner stated Rex was never socialized with children and would growl at the baby in the home. He was adopted from a local shelter and was with his owner since he was three months old. Rex has lived with four adults and an eight month old. Owner stated he was kept only in the home and has not been around strangers. He is described as aggressive towards the baby in the home and would growl and bare teeth, he would usually retreat if the baby approaches him. He has not been around other dogs or cats. Rex has never bitten another person or animal. Rex is fearful when he hears loud noises and is nervous and will hide. He is housetrained and is walked twice a day. His food was not touched by owner so his behavior if his food is touched is unknown. He likes baths and had his nails trimmed at the vet. When a stranger approaches his home he will hard bark and continue to bark. Owner stated he is very protective of the home. Rex has a low activity level in the home and owner describes him as mellow and curious. He likes to play with balls and squeaky toys. He has been kept only indoors and eats dry food Alpo brand. He knows the commands sit and stay. Owner believes Rex will do best in a home with adults or teenagers and in a large home. He sleeps in his dog bed and will follow his owner around the home. Upon intake Rex was relaxed and was not interested in introductions, he laid beside owner. He was collared, photograped and scanned (negative). Owner placed muzzle due to unknown behavior for vaccinations.
06/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: In many ways Rex might be the underdog, but this guy has all the makings of a top companion! He was with his previous owner since he was 3 months old, would follow them around the house, was protective of the home, and laid by their side while he was being surrendered…what a loyal guy! He was never socialized with children (he didn’t know what to make of the scary new baby) and hasn’t been around strangers much, but all things considered, I think he’s doing remarkably well in this strange new place he finds himself in. He can be a little hand-shy and nervous, but he is SUPER treat-motivated, so having one will earn you his undivided attention. Food is definitely the language of friendship, and he warms up to be so, so sweet and waggy. He has great leash manners and is always looking up at me. He makes soft eye contact when I pet him and warms up to initiate it. He is reported to be housebroken (he seems it), to like to play with squeaky toys, and to have a low activity level. Now, when I go to get him from his kennel, he does an endearing little tap dance and bats his paw at me…hello perfect little sidekick! This underdog is waiting for his day at Brooklyn ACC…please come check him out!
06/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rex previously lived with 4 adults and an eight month old. The owner stated Rex was reactive towards the child in the home; he would growl and bare his teeth. The owner mentioned Rex is housetrained and has a low activity level. The owner describes Rex as mellow and curious. At intake it was reported Rex was relaxed but not interested with introductions and laid next to the owner, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Rex came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was social towards the assessor with a slow approach. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Rex was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Rex was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner Rex can be reactive around children; the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children and we recommend a dog to dog interaction before being place into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog licks, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash at the Care Center, Rex greets with a stiff, high stance and enters the pen slowly with raised hackles but a soft face. After greeting he begins to soften his body language and explore the pen but does not interact further with the helper dog.
06/19/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR

He becomes more relaxed as he wanders in the pen, ignoring the other dog. He is slightly sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount as he wanders in the pen. 6/19: Rex greets with a stiff, high stance and enters the pen slowly with raised hackles but a soft face. After greeting he begins to soften his body language and explore the pen but does not interact further with the helper dog. 6/24: Rex is nervous as he greets the other dog. He is sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount as he wanders in the pen.
