09/10/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Gentle eyes and a big smile welcome me as I stand in front of Remy’s door. The copper hair lighting up his face and enhancing his coat, brighten his kennel and shine in the sun. What a beautiful dog ! Remy might be a stray but he has been beautifully cared for. He was a “house dog” for sure. He is so well groomed, healthy looking and displays such a nice disposition toward us, humans. Remy is a little anxious , though. We understand, of course. He is leashed easily but is a bit taken aback by his walk around the care center. He does not recognize the area and alternate a slow with a fast pace, sniffing the ground here and there in the hope may be to find something familiar. He eliminates on the way and does not mark his territory. He nears other dogs , birds and squirrels without fuss and is calm in playgroup with his peers. Back at the care center, Remy and I settle near a bench. He leans on me, Rottweiler way and accepts my caresses. Remy needs a lot of comforting..He is a sweetheart with gentle manners who so deserves to have a new leash on life. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. He is a big bear who will give you lots of hugs…
09/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Remy came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was shy upon intake. Remy allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, lip lick, eyes averted. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, open mouth, body soft. Remy followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted. He became focused on exit at the end of Tag item. Remy moved his legs and body away upon paw Squeeze attempt, so remaining item was conducted using Flank. He gave whale eye during Flank positioning, but eventually stood still and had no response to both Flank Squeezes. Remy lightly played with Toy, taking it softly in his mouth, will relinquish. The Behavior Team feels Remy would do best with an Experienced adopter who does not have young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, lip lick Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, open mouth Tag: 2. Dog follows at the end of the leash, a bit distracted, focused on exit at end of game. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/ 2: 3. Whale eye during positioning, once positioned does not have response to both squeezes Toy 1: 1. Dog plays softly, will relinquish toy to you.
09/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
09/08/16: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Remy is tolerant of calm approach, and ignores play solicitation. Remy arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home setting. The behavior team feels that Remy could potentially be adopted to a home with another calm dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions.
