A volunteer writes: Have you been searching for the answer to the age-old question, “Who’s a good boy?” If so, Reece has the answer for you (here’s a hint: IT’S HIM!). 🙂 Reece is estimated to be about a year old and certainly has the joy and energy of a puppy–he loves to run around saying hi to everyone, trying to chase pigeons, and generally having lots of fun. Reece is very sweet and affectionate, loves to cuddle (trying to fit his whole little body into your lap if you’ll let him), and knows how to sit (and shake hands) for treats. Reece seems excited to play with other dogs and mostly does well with them in playgroup, although he’s still learning the rules of how to play politely with other dogs (pretty normal for a young dog like him). Please come and see this sweet boy today at the Brooklyn ACC!
09/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reece came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Behavior during intake: Reece was friendly and excited he allowed all handling by the counselor. During SAFER Reece was playful when entering the room he had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Reece was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Reece was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Reece appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog mouths the leash playfully no pressure. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. 09/20/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATIONÂ

With further play group sessions, Reece begins to be uncomfortable with play and displays conflicting play behaviors and offers corrections. The Behavior Department believes Reece would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however a dog-dog interacting can be conducted with a potential adopter’s dog to assess Reece’s comfort level. 9/20: Reece displays loose and wiggly as he greets the female dog. He solicits gentle play and is able to explore the pen when play is not reciprocated. When in a group of playful male and female dogs, Reece solicits and engages in gentle play with them. 9/21: Reece engages in gentle play with male and female dogs. He becomes uncomfortable with high energy, novice play and begins to bark and back away. 9/22: Reece continues to engage in gentle play. He becomes uncomfortable with novice play styles and begins to displaying conflicting play solicitations. When the other dog offers correction, Reece runs away. 9/23: Reece is overwhelmed with high energy play and does not fully engage but continues to attempt to solicit gentler play. 9/24: Reece becomes uncomfortable with play is solicited, his body becomes stiff and he begins to offer correction. 9/27: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Reece displays loose and wiggly body language as he socializes with male and female dogs.
