03/16/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/16/17 21:20 Basic Information: Redman is a 6 years old unneutered male American Pit Bull Terrier Mix. He lived in his previous home since he was a pup. He had to be surrendered to our shelter because of the previous owner’s living situation. He has no known history of health problems. Socialization: Around strangers Redman was very friendly. He lived with a child that was 3 years old and spent time with kids from the ages of 4 and 8. Around children he was very playful but sometimes he would play exuberantly with them. He also played exuberantly with adults. He lived all of his life with his partner Loki who was also 6 years old like him and a couple of other dogs when he was younger. As he grew older, his play style with Loki became excessive and had to be separated at times. He would play somewhat rough with other dogs. He never spent time with cats. Redman has no know bite history. Behavior: Redman would often go potty indoors when not taken out. He would destroy household items indoors. He would bark excessively when left alone. He is terrified of storms and unknown loud noises. He was not really bothered when his previous owner touched his food while he was eating. He would growl when his previous owner attempted taking his toys/treats away but allowed her to take them. He would stared/disobey when told commands like get off the furniture but would not be bothered when physically removed from the furniture. He would attempt to wiggle away when restraint. He did not enjoyed baths. He would bark when an unfamiliar approached the home. The previous owner could only recall one instance when Redman growled at an unfamiliar that approached her outside. For a New Family to Know: Redman was described to us as a friendly and affectionate dog. His activity level is high. The previous owner favorite thing about Redman was that he would sleep in the bed sometimes. He would stay in his favorite spot: the couch when the previous owner was at home. His favorite toys were balls and ropes. He was kept mostly in doors. He would sleep in the owner’s bed or in a separate cage away from the previous owner other dog. His diet consisted of dry Pedigree. He was mostly house trained and would go on the grass outside. He had accidents a few times a week. He would destroy household items, bark and go potty when left alone in the house. He was crate trained and would do well for about 6 hours. His known commands were sit and paw. He allowed handling.

A volunteer writes: I like my men warmhearted, energetic and full of fun, and handsome Redman delivers on all counts! He’s also a great athlete, a big goofball and surprisingly gentle for his size, and nothing will bring a smile to your face faster than his version of the game of fetch, preferably enjoyed over frozen snow for maximum slipping and sliding hilarity. Even when the ball stops short of the fence, Redman barrels right into it, his butt ‘climbing’ above him as gravity catches up with doggie enthusiasm. He loves to chew and kick but never guards his ball, and once he’s had his fill of holding and munching, he drops it from his mouth and steps back to wait for another throw–what a good teammate! Redman lived with his extremely high energy brother, so may have missed out on learning the finer points of playtime etiquette in his former home. He’s sociable but can be a rough and tumble guy in playgroup, and needs a brush up on his dog greeting manners when on leash too, yet his heart is definitely in the right place. With training and appropriate socializing opportunities, I bet he’ll make his new parents proud. Redman knows how to take care of his business outdoors, he’s great at following sit and stay commands, takes treats softly, is never pushy or mouthy when jumping up, and unlike most ‘ball dogs’, he’s not grabby either, just insistent! Redman’s lived with kids, he’s did well in his behavior assessment, and now there’s only one piece of the happily ever after puzzle still missing…a loving, experienced forever home. Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Exuberantly playful Behavior toward dogs: Played excessively with the dog he lived with, played rough with other dogs. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Yes, he would growl when his owner took away his toys or treats. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Redman is described as friendly and affectionate with a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/19/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, he is panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Redman displayed a high level of energy and movement on his asssessment, jumping up in an attention seeking manner. He displayed no concerning behaviors. PLAYGROUP: Redman arrived to the care center with another dog, with whom his previous owner described him as “He lived all of his life with his partner Loki who was also 6 years old like him and a couple of other dogs when he was younger. As he grew older, his play style with Loki became excessive and had to be separated at times”. Redman engages in bouncy, running play with female dogs, and may be selective when engaging with male dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Redman and social or tolerant resident dogs. ENERGY LEVEL: Redman’s previous owner described him as having a high activity level. During his assessment, he displayed a high level of energy and movement, jumping up on the assessor. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/17/17 During his initial medical exam, Redman was social and allowed handling. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to potential possession guarding behavior. Owner stated that Redman will growl if his toys or treats are taken from him. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Redman can be left alone while in possession of a toy or treat so that he does not escalate from a growl. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Redman was observed to growl when engaged with items. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Redman’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.) _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.)
03/18/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR

Redman engages in bouncy, running play with female dogs, and may be selective when engaging with male dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Redman and social or tolerant resident dogs. 3/18: When off leash with female dogs Redman engages in bouncy, running play with the eventual intent to mount.
