A volunteer writes: Red should probably be called ‘Champagne’ as that’s the color of his gorgeous clean and well groomed coat. It’s soft and silky to the touch and as I pet him his tail wags and he leans in closer and closer. So sweet. After a couple of stand up hugs and kisses, when I sit on a park bench his paws come in my lap for more kisses. His one blue eye and one hazel eye complete his unique look. Red’s leash manners are lovely, he pulls from time to time but is responsive to his person, he shows off his sit for a treat which he takes so gently with the very edge of his teeth. He’s my best treat taker ever! Red poses for pictures like a pro, and he loves the comfort of being with a person. He also enjoys the company of other dogs, playing softly with both males and females. Red is a “frequent flyer” with us, and is hoping for a stable and warm person with whom to spend his happily ever after. He’s gorgeous, gentle and sweet and is hoping to meet you today.
BEHAVIOR:
KNOWN HISTORY: None
3/6/17 Unaltered Male, Stray
SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/8/17
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. He is repeatedly shoulder rubbing.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Summary: Red Velvet gave several signs that he was uncomfortable during his assessment, panting, displacement scratching, yawning, and shoulder subbing. He did allow all handling.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs.
PLAYGROUP:
Red engages in soft play with both male and female dogs, but appears uncomfortable with more exuberant play and will offer correction. He arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends slow introductions with any potential resident dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/6/17
During his initial medical exam, Red Velvet was tense and snapped.
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Red Velvet so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below)
Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful (Red Velvet has displayed distance increasing signals when uncomfortable. These appropriate signals should always be observed and respected. It is important to move slowly with Red Velvet ,to build positive associations, and to allow Red Velvet to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention.)

3/7: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Red Velvet is tolerant of polite greeting, and play solicitation. He offers is uncomfortable with and offers correction when play becomes exuberant.
3/8: Red greets male and female dogs, then roams the pen while keeping to himself.
3/18: Red engages in soft play with male and female dogs. He offers correction when solicited with more exuberant play.
3/19: Red engages in a bit of bouncy play with a female dog.
