09/15/16 12:30 King is a two year old black and white neutered American Pitbull mix. He was surrendered by his owner due to behaviors he was displaying in the home and a new baby on the way. Owner stated King has been snapping at people in the home and has become too much to handle for the family. King has lived with two adults, a teenager and a six month old baby. He is described as outgoing around strangers and will jump on new people he meets. Around the children he is relaxed and will engage in somewhat rough play. He lived with another male Pitbull in the home and was described as playful and will engage in exuberant play with the other dog. He has not been around cats. King is walked three times a day and is used to leash walks. He will pull very hard on leash. He will urinate indoors and is partially housetrained. King will growl and snap if his food is touched while eating. Owner stated once the food or treat is given to King he will guard the food and is he is approached his hair will raise and he will bite. When a toy is taken away he will play tug of war and try to hide the toy. He will growl when his paws are touched and will snap. When a stranger approaches his home he will bark and relax once inside the home. King will eat out of the garbage if left alone. He will play with ropes and likes tug of war. He has been kept indoors and knows the commands sit, stay, down and give me paw. She will pull very hard on leash. She eats dry food Pure Balance and fed twice a day. He loves any treat. 09/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
King was returned to our care centers by his owners as they report he has been snapping at people in the home, this behavior in conjunction with other noted behavioral concerns has become too much for the family to handle. Because of these reasons, the behavior department recommends King be placed with a New Hope rescue partner who can provide an experienced foster home that has the means to appropriately manage King and this behavior. It is crucial that a plan for his care is presented; consultation with a qualified trainer/behaviorist to help address issues that may present outside of the care centers is highly advised.
8/24 Assessment King is a two year old neutered dog who was surrendered to our care centers due to aggressive behaviors in the home in conjunction with a new baby in the home. It has been reported that the owner has tried several different training methods to work with King though seen no progression. According to the owner, King struggles with severe food aggression and has a bite history because of it, multiple bites delivered as a result. King will growl, snarl and then prepare to bite over food – the owner has also noted that he has a habit of eating out of the trash and if reprimanded will also attempt to bite. It has also been reported that he will growl and snap if his paws are touched. King is described as outgoing around strangers and will jump on those he meets. He lived with another male dog in the home and is described as playful, engaging with the other dog; King has not been around cats. King has lived with two adults, one teenager and a six month old baby; he is described as relaxed around the children though will at times engage in rough play. Upon intake, King was tense and stood close to his owner. He kept his head low and body tense when scanned by the admissions counselor, growling was noted. Collaring and photograph proceeded with assistance from owner. During SAFER, King came into the assessment room fearful and timid, he was not interested with the assessor he would keep his distance and run away. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as King is very fearful and would not allow any form of touch. He displayed no interest in the toy resource item during this portion of the assessment. Due to the behavior noted in home as well as in shelter, it is recommended that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced foster home to work with King and allow him to interact at his own pace is most beneficial at this time. A proper period of decompression is advised before any introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar stimuli; force-free, reward based training is advised. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, King is anxious and mostly avoids greeting the other dog. He greets the other male dog briefly but mostly keeps to himself as he explores the pen.
