Out of concern for his stress level, a SAFER assessment will not be performed at this time. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Rambo is initially nervous in a group of calm male and female dogs, but has become more bouncy and social with further playgroup sessions. According to Rambo’s previous guardian, Rambo has lived with 2 dogs, one small spayed female and a large spayed female. He played chase with them and play bowed. The Behavior Department recommends that Rambo be placed with dogs that match his gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/7/17 Rambo was a bit fearful and his tail was tucked. He growled when counselor approached but with the assistance of the owner he allowed to be collard, scanned and photographed. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/8/17 Rambo was fearful and allowed very minimal handling during his initial medical examination. ENERGY LEVEL: Rambo displays a medium to low energy level in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment in addition to behavior in shelter, the behavior department recommends Rambo be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Rambo to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Rambo to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Rambo presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Rambo’s previous owner notes that Rambo has bitten when attempting to touch his food bowl. We recommend that Rambo be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Rambo’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Rambo has a bite history and escalates quickly to snapping, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Rambo needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Rambo as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
