MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
12/19/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 48.6 LBS.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Rachel and feel that she will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Rachel as aversive methods are likely to heighten her fear and increase aggression.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Rachel can be nervous around strangers and at times difficult to handle. Rachel displays clear signs of discomfort and it is important to respect those signs and to help Rachel gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation.)

12/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Things happen and dogs can only tell us about it through their body language. Rachel speaks loud and clear: stranger danger! If she doesn’t know you, it’s hard to get through to her. It takes time, patience, a soft voice, gentle touch and more patience. But, once you’ve broken through that self protection barrier, Rachel is cuddly, affectionate, gives kisses, solicits petting and will lean right into you to let you know she’s OK with you. Our behavior team has spent a lot of time with her and loves her. They play bow to her and she play bows right back! She climbs up on the bench to snuggle in close to her favorite staffer, gives gentle kisses and a soft tail wag. Rachel pulls a bit on leash, is probably housetrained, ignores other dogs we pass on our walk but in group is a player! She loves little dogs, and does well with large dogs who are respectful and mellow with a similar play style to hers. A group of young children passed us as we walked and Rachel stood by my side quietly as she watched them pass. No pulling, no reaction – good girl Rachel!! Rachel’s face and body language tells 1000 stories – we just need to be tuned in and pay attention to what she’s telling us. I’m so happy I met her today and hope that the right person, and the right home is out there.
12/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/19/16 Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Rachel has allowed some handling in the care center but she is tense and avoids interaction with new caretakers. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for her stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of the shelter environment; force-free, reward based training is advised. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Rachel is social and polite in groups of large and small dogs. She engages in soft play, and offers appropriate correction when uncomfortable. Based on observation observed in our care, the behavior department feels that Rachel may be placed into a home with other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/13/16 During initial exam Rachel appeared to be very nervous and snapped at the handlers. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: While Rachel may benefit best from placement with a rescue partner, she has been observed to warm up and display social behavior upon a slow/soft approach after giving her an appropriate period to adjust to unfamiliar situations/people. Rachel has been noted to become soft, loose, wiggly and playful, readily accepting all pets and handling from familiar staff members. Though she has remained difficult to manage within the shelter, the behavior department would like to note such observations as it is believed that much her fear based behavior is environmental.
