05/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Queso Suizo reminds me of a soft Steiff bear plush toy. His feet are perfect, round, plump, trimmed nails — just like a Steiff would be. He’s shy and sweet, probably housetrained as he goes potty as soon as we’re out the door. Queso pulls slightly on leash, but is easily managed as we head down the street. Off leash in the yard, he flopped over right away, rolling in the fake grass, plump little feet waving in the air. Belly rub time! Such a cute guy. This Swiss Cheese sits for treats and gives me his paw, showing off how smart he is. His coat is a gorgeous red/orange, lush and calling out for me to run my hands down it. He’s calm and gentle, slightly hand shy, but happy to lay his head in my lap for petting. The perfect calm gentleman with whom to end my day, he’s easy, happy for affection without really soliciting it. He’s been shy during his stay with us, even in his first group play session, sniffing his greeter but keeping to himself thus far. Sometimes the shy, quiet ones have the most to say once they open up, so stay tuned, or better yet, come meet our debonair redhead today.

Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Queso Suizo appeared fearful in the assessment room, panting and having a low tail and tense body. He did approach the assessor when called over and he allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 5/1: When introduced off leash to female dogs, Queso Suizo is initially cautious and reluctant to approach. He approaches a calm female dog from behind and sniffs. He otherwise keeps to himself. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/28/17 During his initial medical exam, Queso Suizo was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Queso Suizo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Queso Suizo may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful: Queso Suizo is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Queso Suizo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Queso Suizo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Queso Suizo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Queso Suizo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
