04/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited profile Date of intake 3/31/2017 Unaltered female, stray Other notes: Queen Liz came into the care center in a crate, growling when approached by staff. Upon intake, Queez Liz was tense but allowed handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 4/5/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, body soft, mouth closed, slightly distracted Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted by other stimuli. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Hiereyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral Summary: Queen Liz hard barks in her kennel, but relaxed once outside and allowed all handling. She may benefit from a slow approach and slow introduction, preferably with treats, so Queen Liz can warm up at her own pace. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 3/31/2017 During her initial medical exam, Queen Liz was tense but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Queen Liz so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Queen Liz has been enthusiastic and social when outside of kennel. Queen Liz will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behavior outlined below) _X_Kennel presence – While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Queen Liz may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. Queen Liz should never be forced into confined spaces. If attempting crate training, it should always be Queen Liz’s choice by providing a positive retreat den, door left open to assist in creating a positive association with the crate. A crate should never be used as punishment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing her to new situations. 4/11 UPDATE: Queen Liz continues to hard bark in her kennel and snaps when people approach her kennel door. Queen Liz has also started elevator jumping, causing both dogs in adjacent kennels to react. In order to prevent further rehearsal of this behavior and to decrease Queen Liz’s stress levels, we recommend that she move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. She is not thriving in the shelter environment.
