Quasar A1121154 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination. His previous owner reports severe on-leash reactivity in a home environment as well as snapping at body parts in front of his face. 09/03/17 15:24 Quasar is a 2 year old altered black large. He was adopted from the ACC and is being returned due to behavior. He has no injuries or health problems that the owner is aware of. Around strangers, Quasar tends to bark nonstop and owner stated he may try to lunge at strangers, children, and people with carts. She has heard and seen him growl and snarl at strangers while trying to lunge at people. He also tends to react when people move or wave their hands in front of him. She stated he will try to bite their hands or legs when their hands move around. The owner also stated that Quasar will lay across her lap and have his mouth open wide. He has snapped at her face and when she moves away, she stated that he will continue to try and snap at her. Quasar suffers from separation anxiety and rips up his dog bed and pillows around the house.
08/15/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh my goodness, is Quasar ever so sweet!! His face embodies the innocence and curiosity of a little boy and his spirit does, too! He has been a little erratic on leash (so much to smell!!), seems housebroken, and has been playful with other dogs in our playgroups (but tends to want to mount). He loves all kinds of toys and is super cute with them: he throws stuffies for himself, sloppily bats his paws after balls like a dribbling soccer player, and lights up at the sight of a stray tug toy in the hallway before insisting on giving it a home and carrying it back to his cage. Just the whiff of a treat is enough to get him to sit pretty, and despite being a hungry little guy, he takes them nicely. His love for food and toys is triumphed by his love for love…he is so wiggly, floppy and cuddly it’ll melt your heart! He would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/9/17 Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft but distracted. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1.3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is tense. Summary: Quasar was friendly and social towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: August Stay: Quasar was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Quasar displays a tall posture, and high tail when greeting a novel male. He attempts to solicit play, offering deep play bow. He spins his rear towards the dog, and then mounts him. He responds to handler interruptions. September Stay: According to Quasar’s recent owner, Quasar lunges at other dogs while on walks. When allowed in the pen, Quasar immediately jumps on the greeter dog’s back, before listening to handler interruptions. He is sexually motivated, and oscillates between mounting/jumping on the novel female dog and exploring the pens. Handlers have to repeatedly slow him down. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/7/17: Upon intake Quasar was friendly and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/5/17: During his medical examination, Quasar was active, attention-seeking, and allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Quasar’s activity level in his previous home was not reported, so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)- Due to concerns about Quasar’s on-leash behavior, including growling and lunging, in addition to his reponse to the Toy item during the handling assessment, we recommend an adult-only home for him at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Quasar’s previous owner notes several behavior challenges that will likely need a training protocol to modify, including on-leash reactivity and snapping at hands/legs/faces. We recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training for Quasar as more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of future aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Resource Guarding-Quasar became tense with toy resource during SAFER. We cannot be certain if/how this may manifest in a home environment, but we encourage Quasar to be left alone while he is playing and never to take anything directly from his mouth. When he is asked to drop something, he should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Quasar for relinquishing the item he has. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control – Quasar is noted to snap at body parts placed in front of his face. We have limited details and cannot be certain of the motivation or specific trigger for this behavior, but this will need to be addressed and Quasar will need guidance to learn alternate behaviors and better coping skills for these situations. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration – Quasar’s previous owner notes severe on-leash reactivity, including barking, lunging, growling, and snapping. _X_ Destructive behavior – Quasar is reported to rip up his dog bed and pillows around the house. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Rocky will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects.
