10/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Pumpkin is a shy gal who reminds me more of Easter with her rabbit ears than of Halloween. She is a small damsel, a teensy weensy on the thin side but well dressed in an elegant and shiny grayish brindle coat. Pumpkin is happy to exit her kennel and is leashed easily. She is a good walker, doing her business as we go around the block. She can sit on command even without treats. She is a bit wary, paying attention carefully to her surroundings, counting on her watchfulness to protect herself in a very new and unknown environment. Her attitude changes 180 degrees when she spots an older, very sweet and welcoming female loose in a pen. No more wrinkles on her face, her tail is wagging and her butt is wiggling. Now we’re talking…the 2 ladies are chatting. I wonder what or whom about? Pumpkin felt better after the encounter with her peer. She sat across from me, ate a few treats and accepted my caresses. Breaking the ice can be done in so many different ways. Pretty Pumpkin can be found in our adoption quarters. Come and meet her soon. She will make a wonderful forever best friend, feeling safe and loved in your hands. Another volunteer writes (as told by Pumpkin): Hi! I’m Pumpkin — I guess they named me that ’cause Halloween is coming? Seriously — I’m not orange, and I’m not round. I am delicious though :). I love to play tug and will bring my toy to my human to play, I love to snuggle and bury my head into my human’s neck (so snuggly), I love treats and know how to sit for them, and I’m so good on leash that my very important job here is to help train new volunteers how to leash and walk dogs. Are you impressed? Hey, it’s good to keep busy, I think. I’d love a new home so that I can continue to impress my new people with how delicious I am, so come meet me and let’s go live happily ever after.
10/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown [Unaltered, Stray] Other notes: During intake, she displayed some fearful body language. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10-14-16 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 4. Dog freezes. Summary: Pumpkin showed some potential guarding behavior over the toy. She showed no red flag behaviors with handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Pumpkin has not been completely comfortable interaction with other dogs, however has begun to slowly open up and display increased interest in interacting. Based on observations made in the care center, the behavior department feels that Pumpkin should meet any resident dogs in the care center first, before being placed into a home. Pumpkin would benefit from additional socialization and slow, monitored introductions with dogs who are unfamiliar to her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10-12-16: During her initial medical examination, Pumpkin she had a fearful body language but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopters, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Pumpkin has been fairly timid when meeting new people and new dogs, though she shows good coping skills and responds appropriately. Due to this and to the behavior seen over the toy on SAFER, we recommend an adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: We have no known history for Pumpkin so we are unaware if any guarding or possessive behavior has been seen in a home environment. However, in the care center Pumpkin froze when the toy she was engaged with was removed, so we recommend future adopters be aware of this potential and comfortable safely managing and positively modifying any guarding behavior that may appear in a home environment. Pumpkin should be taught a “drop” cue and items should never be taken directly out of her mouth; rather, items should be traded for something of equal or higher value to help Pumpkin associate items being removed with good rewards.
