A volunteer writes: Nothing creepy, mysterious, or spooky here. Our Pugsly is much more Brady Bunch than he is Addams Family. As soon as I spot him I’m immediately taken with those delicious, delectable ears. Like two sweet sparrows perched atop his head they wiggle with excitement at even the mention of a walk. “Let’s go!” And off we are with Pugsly pulling slightly on leash but my so enjoying the view of those floppy triangles wiggling I can’t take the time to care. Once in the park Pugsly attends to business on a shady patch of grass then stops to marvel at a group of boys caught up in a game of ball. “Woof!!!” he bursts, wanting to join in on the fun, causing one boy to stop right in his tracks, momentarily tying up their game. But no one minds, everyone laughs, and we’re soon again on our way this time to find a bench. Once we do Pugsly has no issue being tethered for photos calmly taking taking treats from my palm and giving me his best angles. But truly he has no bad ones. With his wrinkled brow and his black, button nose he’s calendar ready in every way. Suddenly I realize I’ve run out of my finer treats and am left with only the garden variety towards the bottom of my bag. Surely Pugsly wouldn’t be interested in those. Few are. But I offer one to him anyway, just in case he’s feeling charitable. Sniff, sniff, sniff. That button nose inspects my hand and then that brow falls on me squarely. And just when I think he’s about to turn away in disinterest he slurps it up and wags his tail in thanks. Despite being too thin I can’t help but think Pugsly took that treat out of politeness versus hunger. One as sweet as he appreciates every gesture, feels entitled to nothing, and welcomes any trace of affection. Pugsly himself should be among those boys playing ball, right in the game, enjoying life, and of course only the finest treats. Nothing creepy but occasionally kooky. And you’d have it no other way. Pugsly is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
