06/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Although calm in her kennel, Puffin is always in motion, leash free in the yard. Catching a good picture of her is not easy. She is so lively and happy to be in the company of humans and dogs alike. Her tail wags non stop. She owns such a beautiful smile and sparkling eyes. Well, she is gorgeous all together. A young damsel, part Shepherd, healthy, and so prettily dressed in her silky cinnamon coat. Puffin so wants to meet the friends playing on either sides of our pen. Little dogs, big dogs, anything goes. She enjoys caresses and will roll on the ground in submission. She can run and jump after a ball but does not really retrieve…yet. Definitely, something to teach her. Puffin is a good walker and likes to meet personally every human or dog she encounters…is she a little too friendly? This is so cute and quite appealing to passersby. She often checks on me to see if we are on the same page. She knows who is the leader and teacher. Puffin is just a pup at ten months of age. She is adorable, lively, silly, sweet, sociable and loving but like every youngster, she will need some training to perfect her upbringing. Puffin dreams of a beautiful life…with you. Come an meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center and start building wonderful memories. A volunteer adds: Puffin is a cute cinnamon muffin. She is shy, submissive and sweet like a treat. I can not say that she shone during her stay at the care center and that is may be why she was passed over like a wall flower. She is a little beauty, just a puppy at eight months of age and she needs and yearns for all the good stuff you will want to teach her. She likes other dogs and enjoys a petting session, belly up, on my lap. Puffin has a lot to offer and you will build great memories with her. Come and meet her today and make her the little princess in your life.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR

Summary: Puffin appeared fearful during her assessment, having a tense body and tucked tail. She became very uncomfortable during tag and tried to exit repeatedly. PLAYGROUP: When given time to warm up, Puffin engages playfully with dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Puffin and other social or tolerant dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Puffin appeared fearful but warmed up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/13/17 During her initial medical exam, Puffin was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Puffin so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Puffin may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. Older, gentle children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful: Puffin fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Puffin the option to walk away from any social interaction. Puffin should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Puffin’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Puffin would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate.
