A volunteer writes: Unintentionally I saved the best for last, and I’m singing Charlie’s praises to whoever will listen. He’s an awesome dog, gorgeous, gentle, low key, housetrained, good on leash, ignored people passing us in the street, and stood quietly in the hallway watching a few little dogs pass up by. When I read his former owner’s comments I see that he lived respectfully with a 9 year old Shih Tzu so he seems to ‘get’ small dogs. Who he doesn’t like is cats and we’re told he will bark aggressively when seeing a cat. Charlie has been around kids ages 5 and 6 and is gentle with kids, doesn’t guard his stuff, doesn’t mind being bathed and brushed, likes squeaky toys and fetch, has never been crated and is well behaved when left home alone. I loved my time with Charlie; he’s so gentle and easy to be with, and in a backyard pen he got a bit bouncy with a toy but it was simply too hot for both of us. On our walk we stopped for treats which he takes gently, and cuddled in a doorway for more pictures. Gentle Charlie sat between my legs, then next to me putting his paw on my knee. He’s such a great dog, surrendered through no fault of his own, and is looking for a new person or family to love forever. If a gentle, sweet, easy boy is who will complete you than come meet our Charlie today. I guarantee you’ll fall in love.
SAFER:
Charlie came into our center on 7/22/2016. It is reported he chases and lunges after cats he sees when out on walks. Owner reports Charlie has been around children ages 5 and 6, lived with a 9 year old shih tzu-relaxed, gentle and respectful with all. He is reportedly not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Owner reports Charlie is housebroken, never has accidents. Charlie is described as obedient, loyal, gentle, respectful, and shy. He reportedly knows the cues ‘sit, stay, come, paw, other paw, down’. During intake, Charlie was tolerant of all handling. He was calm and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Charlie was tolerant of all handling during the SAFER assessment. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth open, body soft. Charlie playfully ran along during Tag game, jumped up lightly on assessor towards end of game, and settled easily. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Charlie playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with loose body. Owner reports Charlie’s favorite toys are squeaky balls, and he likes to play fetch. When off leash with other dogs, Charlie solicits greeter dog, and engages in small bouts of play. The Behavior Team feels Charlie would do well with an Average adopter. He should not live with any resident cats.

A volunteer writesI love cheese and when I heard the name..Provolone, my antennas went up.. I saw Provolone, a twelve year old gent, coming from a walk in the park with another volunteer, really majestic in his strawberry blonde suit and shiny amber eyes, very comfortable and easy going. “He is awesome, such a great walker , not a birds or a squirrels chaser, civil with other dogs and so chill, sitting on the bench next to me for close to half an hour…” Provolone, indeed, is a nice elderly. It is hard to believe that he could be twelve years of age. Beside some eye cloudiness visible in the sun and an old aural hematoma, he looks like a rock! His weight is perfect, his coat , magnificent, his gait light and easy….He must have been so well cared for and/or have great genes. Provolone is a well mannered dog, indeed an excellent walker, likely house trained, a “sniffer”, a good “sitter” and a polite customer for roast beef. He has soft manners, is not effusive with his feelings but clearly like a gentle touch, soft words and human company in general. Provolone does stand out. He is tall and blonde, well made and really quite attractive despite his presumed advanced age. I think that he has quite a number of good years up his sleeve and will make a solid companion given a chance. Come and meet Provolone at the Manhattan Care Center, I hope you will be as smitten as I was…
Another volunteer writes: I love the seniors: their dignity, their experience, their quiet affection and acceptance of everything……and Provolone is no exception. A member of the ‘white mask club’, a badge of distinction for the greying seniors, he’s great on leash checking up often as we walk, is likely housetrained using “the facilities” as soon as we were out the door, and has been beautifully taken care of. His coat is lush and clean and his weight perfect for his size. Off leash in a pen he gets a little bouncy playful and it’s so cute to watch this sophisticated and stately dog play. I can picture him as a puppy playing…I wonder if that’s how he sees himself in his mind? Provolone enjoys treats, taking them gently, and when our time together is over hops right back into his kennel. He’s so mellow and easy our behavior team feels that he can be adopted into a home with average dog experience. With many more years ahead of him to love and take care of his new person or family, Provolone is hoping you’ll ask to meet him today. There is no greater feeling than the love of a “senior” dog.
PROFILE
Dog appears to be dull but friendly.
BEHAVIOR:

Provolone was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on sniffing the room. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, slight lip lick. Provolone showed no interest in Toy. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Provolone would do well with an Average adopter.
