09/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 09/21/2017 Intact female, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/24/2017 Summary: Priscilla appeared fearful in the assessment room, maintaining distance from the assessor. When the assessor approached her, she growled, so the handling assessment was not conducted. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Priscilla is extremely fearful. She is shut down and refuses to explore the pens. Priscilla was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Due to Priscilla’s behavior during group, The Behavior Department recommends that Priscilla be the only resident dog in the home. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Priscilla associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/22/2017 During her initial medical examination, Priscilla was tense and whale eyed upon handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment, though Priscilla displays a low energy level in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Priscilla is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Priscilla has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Priscilla gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Priscilla, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Priscilla to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
09/22/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash at the Care Center, Priscilla is extremely fearful. She is shut down and refuses to explore the pens. Priscilla was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Due to Priscilla’s behavior during group, The Behavior Department recommends that Priscilla be the only resident dog in the home. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Priscilla associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. 9/22: Priscilla is extremely fearful, refusing to greet the other dog, sitting in one area, visibly shaking. 9/23: Priscilla continues to be fearful and shut down, when introduced to a novel female dog. She displays raised hackles while sitting down and tenses her muzzle when the other dog attempts to greet her face to face. 9/24- 9/25: Priscilla breifly greeted and wagged her tail at a calm male and female dog today.
