08/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I love spending time with Princess. She is an attractive and healthy-looking gal with an engaging smile and lively eyes who really knows how to make her caretaker feel good and happy. She plays wonderfully well (and without going crazy) with balls and toys that she does not guard, walks at my pace in the street, comes on the double when I call her, and sits immediately at the sight of a treat. No snatching involved. Princess is polite. She handles herself nicely in playgroups with her peers, and seeing her play with a young male was like watching a harmonious ballet. Princess is at her best in the cuddling department. She is not overwhelming but comes gently on the lap for kisses, hugs and body scratches. The bench is a favorite place where she knows she will get the love she so much needs. She is a big tail wagger and appreciates all the attention she gets from us, humans. Princess does not particularly care for her kennel. She is no guard dog and belongs to a home sweet home where she can move freely, play and be with the people she loves. Come and meet our Princess and make her the queen of your castle. Another volunteer writes: Looking up with hope in her eyes, and so beautiful I couldn’t resist her Princess is easily leashed and out we go. Her leash manners are a joy, she checks up as we walk, her tail wags as we chat, and she goes potty the moment we’re out the door. Kisses, tail wags, and gentle hugs are what this little girl is all about, and give her a treat so she can show off her sit. Princess enjoys the company of other dogs, and while sometimes shy with new people warms up quickly and is a love. She’s ready to be your Princess, wagging her tail as she heads home.

PLAYGROUP: Princess displays social, appropriate behavior toward male and female dogs in the care center. She engages in play with others who are playful, and has been relaxed and appropriate when greeting dogs who are fearful. Princess is utilized as a helper and greeter dog during play groups in the care center. Based on behavior observed in our care, the behavior department feels that Princess may potentially be placed into a home with other social or tolerant dogs. ENERGY LEVEL: Owner reports Princess as active and this matches what we have seen in the care center. Princess is a young, social, enthusiastic dog who will require daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) – Due Princess’s bite history and clear discomfort around new people, we recommend an adult-only home for her comfort and the safety of those around her. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Princess will need a program of counterconditioning/desensitization to address her anxiety around new people and new situations; her negative associations need to be replaced with positive ones so she does not feel a need to aggress when uncomfortable. We recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Princess as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of future aggression Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression – Though observed to be human-social here at the care center, Princess may need time to warm up as owner reports she can be timid when meeting strangers. She has established a willingness to escalate to biting when uncomfortable. We recommend allowing Princess to interact at her own pace, she may do best with a slow introduction and being spoken to in a soft, gentle voice. Force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations and/or people. _X_Multiple bite history
