PROFILE :
Basic Information:
Princess is a three year old German Shepard who was surrendered due to her previous owner moving to a place where animals are not allowed.
Socialization:
Around strangers Princess is shy for days and plays gently with adults and children. Princess has spent time/lived with children ages newborn and up, around them she is relaxed and playful. Princess has never been around other dogs or cats so it is unknown how she will react to being around them.
Behavior:
Princess has never bitten another person or animal. Princess will sometimes get into the garbage and will hide when she hears loud sounds. Princess is friendly when someone touches her food/bowl while she is eating, takes a treat//toy away, holds/restrains her, disturbs her while she is resting/sleeping, gives her a bath, and brushes her. Princess gets nervous when getting her nails trimmed. If an unfamiliar person approached her family or home Princess will growl.
For a New Family to Know:
Princess is described as shy and mellow with a medium activity level. When at home Princess will follow around her owner and likes to play with squeaky toys. Princess was kept indoors only and was fed dry food from the brand Pedigree. Princess is house trained and uses the bathroom on wee wee pads and outdoors. When left alone at home Princess is well behaved and has never been crate trained. Princess likes running and jogging and will run away when off leash.

Other notes:
SAFER ASSESSMENT:
Summary: Princess is difficult to remove from the kennel; she will hide in the back of the kennel and pancake on the floor when trying to take her out. She appears to be uncomfortable and afraid in the shelter environment. She hasn’t allowed any handling from her caretakers. Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, we feel Princess is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see her owner surrender profile for a full summary of her behavior in her previous home.
PLAYGROUP:
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Princess is nervous when interacting with calm male and female dogs. She greets them briefly before keeping to herself. According to Princess’ previous guardian, Princess has never been around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Princess be placed with resident dogs that match her calm sociability. All initial introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision.

5/26: Princess is nervous, slowly approaching a novel male dog and greeting him with neutral body language. She greets him once, before keeping to herself as she explores the pen.
5/27: In a group of calm female dogs, Princess greets them briefly and allows them to greet her before nervously retreating under the bench.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR
Upon intake Princess was very shy, nervous and would run away from the staff, the owner conducted the handling.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During her medical examination, Princess was shy, tense and trembling, she did allow all handling.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only
_X_Place with a New Hope partner- Princess has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only a minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful-Princess has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because she is so uncomfortable, Princess does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to flee away.
