06/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh what a pretty pup we have here !! Unfortunately Smores is no stranger to the shelter system as she has been with us before, she just hasn’t been very lucky I guess. Smores recognized me when I approached her kennel and was happy to see me and the others she recognized from her previous shelter stay. It seems as though now she is alot more shy and untrusting of new people but once a proper introduction occurs she is fine. Since she is shy she is not in the adoption area she is in a more quiet area of the shelter so you need to ask to see her. Smores is in very good health and the same playful puppy I remember. Please consider giving her a permanent stable home she so desperately deserves.
05/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smores came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported Smores lived in a home with children ages 5, 7, 9 , and 11. Smores has reportedly interacted with neighbor’s small dogs, relaxed and playful. Behavior around cats is unknown. Owner reports Smores will bark if someone touches his food, or takes treats away. Owner stated that Smores would bark, growl and can snap if someone takes her toys away. Smores pulled very hard on leash for her relief walk. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, whining. Smores stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick. She did not engage in play during Tag game, focused on assessor’s moves, did not follow at end of leash, appeared anxious and uncomfortable. She gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Smores playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with a loose body. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail above spine level. The Behavior Team feels Smores would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. She will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, whining Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. 6/14 update: Smores remains social and appropriate when interacting outside the kennel with both caretakers and with other dogs; however, her behavior in the kennel appears to be deteriorating. She may bark, lunge, and bare teeth when approached. In order to prevent this barrier reactivity from increasing and to lessen Smores’s stress, we recommend that she move into a stable home environment quickly.

Behavior Issues:
When left alone in the house, Princess is said to destroy stuff indoors. She has never bitten anybody or another animal before. She does growl when her bone or rawhide is taken away or her toy. She is not bothered when her food bowl is touched or when she is disturbed while sleeping. She is not bothered when restrained or when her coat is brushed. She retreats to the back and will growl but once outside she is loose, wiggly, and social. Princess held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, slight tail wag. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick, body soft. Princess was distracted during Tag game, last pass she turned towards the hand to investigate, but not aggressively. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Princess jumped up on assistant playfully while waiting for Food item. She gulped the Food and required a bit of pressure from assess-a-hand to push her cheek out, body a bit stiff. Princess was playful with Toy, but relinquished easily. She had no interest in Rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, Princess was social and tolerant, often engaging in rough and rowdy play.
