07/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It is almost impossible to get to know a dog who is not feeling well…Prince, a seven month old puppy has a big cold and all what he really wants to do is… rest.. We would want to do just the same. Prince is with us as his former master who owned him just for a few months, could not really train him. It is not easy to bring up a youngster and get good “results”, meaning, a well mannered adult. Prince had his plusses and minuses. He was great with the kids of the house, playful and affectionate but was also destructive, fearful of other dogs and did not like to share his toys, which lead to a number of issues…and his relinquishment to the care center. With us, Prince kept mostly to himself, staying rather at the back of his kennel and uncomfortable with dogs passing by. He accepted treats when I came to say hello and even licked the palm of my hand plastered on his door. As I took him out tonight, Prince was very quiet but anyway took roast beef from my fingers and accepted caresses. He sat close to me for more..How not to feel sorry for a seven month old babe ? Still, Prince needs to be adopted by an experienced owner who will work on his basic training and mostly his guarding tendencies as well as his relationship with his peers. Is there someone out-there willing to take the challenge and lead Prince on the path to great dogwood? Prince is at the Manhattan Care Center.
07/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Prince walks calmly on leash. He was shy during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Prince was shy and nervous during handling, displaying fearful body language. He was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Prince was not interested in toys. He was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not interested in engaging. Prince was surrendered to us. According to his previous owner Prince is great around the kids in his home (aged 9), he licks them a lot and plays gentle. Around other dogs he is usually scared, he will lunge at them but if they lunge back or react he will hide or cower. If his food is taken away he doesn’t mind but he has been known to be protective over his toys. Prince is reported to be chewing on furniture when left alone for long periods, so we advise future adopters to make sure to provide mentally and physically stimulation, to keep Prince occupied when left alone. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter with no children in the home who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend Prince be the only pet in the home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper: A1081340
