A volunteer writes: I am pretty sure Prancer is a cross between a pitbull and an Italian meatball. A low-rider, stocky, block head Prancer is the epitome of a head turner. But he’s not all beauty and has the brains to go along with it! Prancer walks nicely on the leash, seems very housetrained, and in only a matter of a few minutes was eagerly showing off his tricks! He sits on command, stays and gives paw, too. When I sat on the bench with him, he gently placed his paw into the palm of my hand, and there we sat holding hands for quite a long time. He even snuck in a few kisses here and there. I can guarantee, if you give Prancer a chance, he will strut right into your heart! Ask to meet him today!
BEHAVIOR :
Prancer came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter system. When approaching Prancer’s kennel he can be seen inside the kennel demand barking on occasion. Once coming out of the kennel Prancer has soft body language and walks well on the leash. He was a bit hesitant to interact with the assessor initially coming into the behavior room. After a couple of minutes he approached the assessor with soft body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. Prancer became a bit uncomfortable, fearful and had slightly tense body language during the tag interaction. He would constantly spin quickly toward the hand, and crouched his entire body during one of the passes it seems out of fear. He had tense body language during the paw squeeze as well but kept his composure and showed no concerning behavior. Due to Prancer’s playgroup notes, and fearful nature we recommend he home with an experienced adopter and no young children at this time.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching ,tail is low, mouth closed, body a bit tense.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back, body a bit tense.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back, body a bit tense.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away.
Prancer approaches the gate with a high tail and a stiff body. Once let in the pen he begins to sniff the other dog, but growls and lunged when the other dog begins to run away. He immediately stop when the handlers interrupted.
