09/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Powder, what a beauty! Now if it were up to me, I might have named him Falkor the the Luckdragon (if you’ve never seen the Neverending Story, Google it– I swear Powder is Falkor’s twin!), but Powder is an equally suitable name for such a unique-looking gentleman. Powder looks like a lab-pit mix, a gentle giant who knows how to walk perfectly on a leash, lived with another dog and got along great with him, and is reported to be housetrained by his former owners. Powder is a gentle, laid back older dog (although he doesn’t seem like he’s really 10!) who goes with the flow and loves butt scratches. Come and see him today! You know that magical feeling that comes with the first powder-y snowfall? Being with Powder the dog will give you that same feeling! Despite being away from the only home he’s ever known, this guy manages to be the epitome of a gentleman. He is very easy to handle, makes sweet soft eye contact, and steadily wags his tail during our time together. He is crazy for treats, leans into me when I pet him, and has managed to keep a youthful puppy glow to his face that makes me think he holds the secret to aging well! He keeps his cage clean (but sometimes can’t hold it til we get outside and has to settle for the hallway!), is said to be housetrained, and likes to lie around the house and play with balls. He previously lived harmoniously with a female pit (his mom), a three year old child (he was relaxed and tolerant, even if the child pulled his tail!), and even a cat (he was playful with it). I can’t get enough of this guy…come check him out at Brooklyn ACC!

During SAFER Powder came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Powder was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Powder was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Powder appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: Powder’s previous owner reported that he was relaxed and playful around the female dog he lived with. When off leash at the Care Center, Powder persistently mounts male and female dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Powder be the only dog in the home, however a dog-dog interaction can be conducted pre-adoption to ensure compatibility.
09/12/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Powder’s previous owner reported that he was relaxed and playful around the female dog he lived with. When off leash at the Care Center, Powder persistently mounts male and female dogs. He does not respond to handler interruptions and requires handler intervention to be removed from the other dogs’ back. The Behavior Department recommends that Powder be the only dog in the home, however a dog-dog interaction can be conducted pre-adoption to ensure compatibility. 9/12: Powder greets with loose wiggly but once he enters the pen he becomes extremely sexually motivated. Attempts to interrupt his behavior failed and he needed to be physically removed from mounting the female helper dog. 9/20: When greeting a male dog, Powder displays soft body language. Once in the pen, Powder immediately mounts the male dog, persisting after handler interruptions. He requires intervention from handlers to be removed for the other dog’s back. 9/30: When meeting a male dog, Powder displays soft body language. He initially attempts to mount the male dog but is able to listen to handler interruptions and explores the pen. He mostly keeps to himself and becomes slightly nervous when the male dog greets him face to face.
