03/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Got ball? Miss Porter is ready to play! With a game of her own invention (how smart is she!) she brings a ball up on a bench, chomps for a moment, then noses it off the bench, jumps down to run after it, back up on the bench and repeat, repeat, repeat! She was so much fun to watch as she’s really good at this game! She’s gorgeous in her caramel color coat, friendly and affectionate, and knows how to sit for a treat which she takes softly. She has a serious face but at one point laughed at a joke I told her closing her eyes and smiling from ear to ear. (Honest – she laughed!). Porter didn’t do well with dogs her own size in group play, so she would probably do best as an only dog, but with a dog as engaging as Miss Porter you won’t need another. Gorgeous, fun and for an endless supply of tennis balls with which to amuse herself, Miss Porter is ready to love you forever and ever.
Another volunteer writes: Porter is always such a lady in her kennel, sitting up front waiting patiently for her walk. No barking or attention grabbing mechanisms for this beauty. Easily leashed we head outside where she uses the ‘facilities’ right away and then we enjoy a pleasant walk together to the park. It’s off leash in the yard where she makes my heart soar as the joy and fun she has with toys and balls is amazing to watch. Porter loves to play and she runs after a ball with abandon bringing it back and dropping it when I throw a toy which now requires a chase. When a treat comes into the mix she shows off her sit, shakes BOTH PAWS, and takes her treat gently. I love Porter and athough I can’t spend the day playing and snuggling with her, you, her lucky adopter can! She’s hoping you’ll stop by to meet her today.
03/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Porter came into our center on 3/15/2016 as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was friendly and allowed all handling upon intake. She pulled slightly on leash for her relief walk. Porter allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, ears back. Porter followed on the end of the leash for Tag game, but escalated quickly mid game, grabbing the leash, not relinquishing easily but eventually lost interest. She grabbed leash during positioning for Squeeze item, a bit stiff. Once positioned, Porter gently pulled paw back on first Squeeze attempt, gently pulled paw back and mouthed assessor’s hand with no pressure on second Squeeze attempt. She playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip, a bit stiff when approached by assess-a-hand. When off leash with other dogs, Porter is defensive, baring teeth, snaps, and follows the helper. Due to potential for possible possessiveness, the Behavior Team feels Porter would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Porter may benefit from being the only resident dog, as well as obedience classes to learn leash manners, as well as the command ‘drop it’ and trade up games. We recommend quick treats as opposed to long lasting chews. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, body soft. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog follows at the end of the leash, escalates quickly on second pass, grabs leash, is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 3. Dog takes away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is a bit stiff. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Porter is defensive and bares teeth to keep the helper dog (male) at a distance. When he approaches again Porter begins to snap and follow him, but she stays low to the ground and maintains fearful body language throughout the interaction.
03/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Porter displayed defensive behaviors during her intial off-leash interaction. While Porter has begun to show some continued interest in play over time, she becomes uncomfortable when engaging for prolonged periods. Based on the observation observed on Porter while in our care, the behavior department recommends allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before introducing her to other dogs. Any introductions should be done at a slow, comfortable pace. Porter arrived as a stray, so any in-home behaviors around other dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Porter is defensive and bares teeth to keep the helper dog (male) at a distance. When he approaches again Porter begins to snap and follow him, but she stays low to the ground and maintains fearful body language throughout the interaction. 3/17 update: Porter again exhibits similar behaviors as those noted above. She is less intense today and is able to sniff around the pen without snapping or baring teeth at the helper dog when he approaches. 3/23 update: Porter bows and briefly plays, but becomes uncomfortable and begins to air-snap when play is too rough. 3/24 update: Porter, again, bows and briefly plays then begins to air snap. She stiffens and barks at a female in an adjacent pen.
