MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
01/19/2017 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 3 NC – MAJOR CONDITIONS NOT CONTAGIOUS, Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 56.2 LBS.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner Potential challenges: _X_Destructive behavior (Owner stated Popcorn was destructive of household items. The motivation for the behavior was unclear. It is important to always leave Popcorn with lasting, engaging toys and food items when left alone to occupy his time and prevent him from chewing on inappropriate items.) _X_Handling/touch sensitivity (Popcorn snapped when being touched near his neck and has frozen upon other forms of direct touch, showing an uncomfortability in certain areas. It is important to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Popcorn to be more comfortable with this.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Popcorn has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Popcorn easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
01/14/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/14/17 18:31 Popcorn is friendly and outgoing around strangers. He has not spent time around children so it’s unknown how he would react but plays gently and exuberantly with adults. He has spent time around dogs of all sizes on the street and is relaxed and playful with them. He has never spent time around cats so it’s unknown how he would react around them. He has never bitten a human and has only bitten an animal but the dog attacked him and he was defending himself. This happened about 7 months ago and it was only one bite and then both dogs stepped away from each other. During loud noises such as storms, Popcorn isn’t bothered. He also doesn’t mind having his food bowl or bones away when he’s chewing on them. When it’s a toy being taken away, he thinks his owner is trying to play. He isn’t bothered by being pulled off of furniture or when restrained from something that he wants. His owner never woke him from his slumber so it’s unknown how he would react. Popcorn loves baths and being brushed but has never had his nails clipped so that to is unknown how he would react. When someone unfamiliar approaches his home or owner he is friendly and jumps up onto them for a good sniffing. Popcorn’s owner describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable. His activity level is medium and when he’s ready to play enjoys tugging balls away from his owner. He loves going outside but hangs out primarily inside. He sleeps in his crate in the living room and is very house-trained. He never goes potty indoors and loves going outside wherever he can pick up a scent. When left home alone, he is well-behaved but will chew up household items if they are left on the floor. He’s crate-trained and does well in it for up to 8 hours. Popcorn knows sit, come, down, stay, and leave it. For exercise, he enjoys brisk walks on leash and will sometimes pull hard but only when he sees something that excites him. His owner feeds him Iams dry food, 2 and 1/2 cups, once a day. Usually he likes to put a heafty scoop of wet food onto the dry. Popcorn’s favorite treats are Jerky ones.

A volunteer writes: I first saw Popcorn walking calmly with staff, and knew I needed to meet this handsome boy. He’s definitely my “type”, in addition to having the name of my all time favorite snack food. He’s fabulous!!! A calm and easy walker on leash, he seems to be housetrained, he’s the perfect weight for his size, and he’s a total schmush! A snuggle boy who gives stand up hugs, loves to give kisses, and loves to cuddle close in my lap. Swoon~ A lover of toys, a ball is the best, and a ball that squeaks is better than everything — once he discovered my squeaky ball, he was in squeaky heaven! Carrying it around the pen in his mouth, it was like he had found his bestie. Popcorn knows how to sit (with some coaxing), takes treats a bit grabbily, but all is forgiven with another kiss and tail wag. I loved my time with this delicious boy and you will, too. No extra salt or butter needed — he’s perfect as is! Come meet him today.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 1/14/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one year and three months) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing. Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Owner provided contradicting information about Popcorn’s behavior towards dogs on the phone and in person. He did not describe any aggression, one version claimed Popcorn was relaxed and playful while the other that he pulled towards dogs strongly but was kept away from them. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported. Bite history: Yes, seven months ago a dog attacked him and he bit the other dog leaving one bite mark. Housetrained: Energy level/descriptors: Popcorn is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable with a medium activity level. Other notes: Popcorn was destructive of items in the home, this was sated over the phone and not during intake so it is unclear what his motivation in the destruction behavior was. Upon intake Popcorn showed teeth when the counselor went to collar him. He was reactive to items, such as the scissors, pen, and lens cap. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/19/17 Summary: Popcorn snapped towards the assessor when an attempt to touch was made. Popcorn has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. Please review the full owner surrender profile for information on Popcorn’s behavior in his previous home as a guideline.
