07/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who is Pookie? She arrived as a stray but came complete with a cute name, a clean coat and the solid good looks and manners of a beloved pet. A girl of mystery yet no mystery at all, she’s nothing more or less than a friendly, gorgeous and well-trained pup looking for someone new to love and a quiet place to call home. If that home turns out to be yours, all the better for you! Ms P is a bit shy at first, but a slow approach, a gentle touch and some tasty motivation soon have her eagerly trotting out the door and she’s happy to show off her nice leash walking, apparent house training, and mastery of a ‘sit’ command right out of the gate. I reward her for her excellent posing, and she snuffles treat after treat from my hand then begins nuzzling into my pocket for more! Pookie’s a smart cookie who knows what she likes (food, glorious food) and that makes her an excellent candidate for further training. This time next month she could be laying down, giving paw, maybe even high-fiving…the sky’s the limit as long as you keep the treats coming! Fetching lessons would be a good start as she currently prefers to chase the ball rather than retrieve it, but haven’t you been looking for an excuse to cancel your gym membership anyway? Pookie greets other dogs in the street with calm, good-natured friendliness, and when we pass a staff member about to drive home, she makes a beeline for the door. Clearly someone knows just how much fun a car ride can be! Pookie is a great date, and the only sad moment comes when it’s time to return to her kennel, and she ‘pancakes’ forlornly at the door, unwilling to give up my company and return all alone to her den. After being slowly coaxed back inside, she turns her best pleading puppy face up in hopes I will weaken, but all I can do is promise her that soon, maybe even today, a wonderful, kind, loving adopter will come to take her home. Are you the one who’ll keep my promise to Pookie? Please don’t make her wait too long…
07/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pookie is fearful of the shelter environment, she walks with low and fearful body language. Because she is so fearful, she repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler with her tail tucked, ears back, body low. At one point Pookie’s lips slightly curled and she gave a low growl. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources portion Pookie showed no interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup Notes: Pookie solicits from the other dog, then wanders off when not reciprocated.
07/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Pookie has displayed brief interest in greeting and interacting with dogs, eventually with attempts to solicit play. The behavior team feels that Pookie should have a pre-adoption interaction however, to ensure compatability with a future resident dog. She arrived as a stray, so it’s unknown how her behavior will translate into a home with other dogs. 7/17: When off leash with other dogs, Pookie greets politely and is overall interested, continuing to reapproach. 7/19: Pookie enters the pen with a slightly tense body and appears highly aroused. She then offers spins and bows to eventually solicit. 7/20, 7/21: Pookie solicits from the other dog, then wanders off when not reciprocated.
