07/07/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/07/17 16:20 Basic Information: Pooch is a 1 year and 6 month old male that has no current or previous medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Pooch for a year and a half but had to surrender due to personal problems. Socialization: According to the owner Pooch is friendly and plays gently with adults. He has been around children ages 4 and 13 on a daily basis and was always relaxed and respectful around them. Owner had another dog in the home that was Pooche’s mom and stated that Pooch and Sophie got along great together and were always respectful around one another. Owner has never tried to bring Pooch around any other dogs. Owner also had 2 male cats in the home and stated that Pooch was always relaxed and respectful around both animals. He does not have a bite history. Behavior: When there are fireworks or thunderstorms outside, Pooch will bark or try to hide. He is not bothered when someone takes away his food, treats or toys, being pushed or furniture, being held or restrained, being disturbed while sleeping, being given a bath, having his nails trimmed or if someone brushed his coat. When unfamiliar people would approach the home or yard, Pooch will bark. For a New Family to Know: Pooch is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. He has a high activity level and loves to play with balls and rope toys. In the home, he liked to follow the owner around from room to room. Pooch was kept mostly indoors and is very house trained. He was fed both wet and dry food brand Pedigree in the home. When Pooch was left alone in the home or yard, he was always well behaved. Owner has never tried to crate train him so behavior is unknown. He knows the cues sit, come, high five, down and don’t touch. For exercise, he was taken on brisk walks on the leash or be let out in the yard to play. When on leash, Pooch tends to pull very hard. Owner has never tried walking Pooch off leash as he would run away. Behavior during intake: Pooch had a loose and wiggly body and was jumping all over counselor. Counselor was able to scan for a mc and take a picture without any issues but was unable to collar due to Pooch being too hyper.

A volunteer writes: If you like big, happy, goof balls then Pooch is the one for you!!!! When I met him this past weekend he immediately jumped up on me to kiss me and then play bowed, like an old friend at a party; here’s a kiss, lets have some fun. We played for a bit, he likes to play rough and rowdy and then settles down for some quiet time on the bench. Pooch would love an active home and someone to play with. If you are interested in adopting Pooch, come to the Staten Island Care Center and meet him.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 7/7/2017 During his initial medical exam, Pooch was friendly and active, allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His owner describes Pooch as having a high activity level which matches what we have seen here at the care center. He would do best with daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Pooch is very active, enthusiastic, and social, at times may jump up. Due to his size and strength and lack of body awareness, we feel he can possibly knock over and intimidate small children. Older, dog savvy children can be considered pending an in depth interaction. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control- Pooch may jump up when excited, remaining soft. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting _X_Strength/leash pulling- Pooch is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
07/13/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Pooch was only around his mother today. When first greeting, both dogs were very excited and instantly began playing rough. After a few minutes, both dogs settled and explored the yard together. Pooch continues to engage in rough and mouthy play with his mother (Sophie). They will often roll around together and engage in vocal play.
