A volunteer writes: Toys? I love toys, says Poncho! And what I love about Poncho is that despite being emaciated, he hasn’t lost his desire to play and make friends. We’re feeding Poncho an extra meal daily to help him gain some weight. Easily leashed, he potties as soon as we’re out the door, and looks up as if waiting to be told he’s a ‘good boy’, and of course I told him! Poncho lets me put a coat on him and we’re off to the park. His leash manners are lovely, he walks nicely by my side, checking up often as if asking if we’re good (we’re SO good Poncho), doesn’t mind posing for some photos, and understandably takes treats with gusto. Poncho wags his tail at passing dogs, and once off leash, finds toys and balls to play with, going from one to another for some fun. A quick woof from time to time reminds me that Poncho needs something, and I’m so happy to oblige. I love that despite lack of food and care in his recent past, he loves people, loves to have fun, and just wants to move forward with his life: a new person and/or family to provide plentiful nutritious food, a warm cozy bed, a full toy box and lots of love. That’s what we wish for Poncho.
12/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/12/2016 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with low tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture, mouth closed Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy 3. Dog takes away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: Poncho was friendly and readily allowed all handling, though become stiff upon approach when engaged with toy. Poncho may require positive reinforcement to address any potential guarding issues that may present in a new home environment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Poncho has mostly been intent on mounting female dogs in the care center, though at times has had polite interactions. The behavior department feels that Poncho would benefit from having time to decompress as the only resident dog in a new home until his behavior around dogs can be followed up on outside the care center. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During his initial medical exam Poncho allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (We cannot be certain whether any guarding or possessive behavior may appear in a home environment, but we recommend adopters comfortable with safe management and modification of guarding behavior in case it does.)
12/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Poncho has mostly been intent on mounting female dogs in the care center, though at times has had polite interactions. The behavior department feels that Poncho would benefit from having time to decompress as the only resident dog in a new home until his behavior around dogs can be followed up on outside the care center. 12/13: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Poncho is distracted by stimuli outside the pen. He rushes up to the female greeter and postures to mount her. When unable, he becomes distracted once more. 12/16: Poncho is sexually motivated and will growl when he is unable to mount. 12/20: Poncho mimics playful behaviors offered by the female helper dog, though still intends to mount. 12/22: Poncho approaches and offers polite greeting. 12/23: Poncho is sexually motivated and will growl in response to correction. He does not engage in play when solicited. 12/30: Poncho will engage in some play when solicited with intent to mount the female dog. 12/31: Poncho greets a group of females politley then spends his time exploring the yard. He does bark and growl at an unaltered male in an adjacent pen. 1/4: Poncho follows female dogs and postures himself to mount one of them. He vocalizes when unable.
