08/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Prolife 8/22/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Other notes: Owner stated that Polo was lunging and snapping at her and her grandchildren (ages five and eleven). SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/27/17 Look: 5. Dog snaps. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Polo snapped when his collar was taken for look, so the rest of the handling portion if the assessment was omitted. PLAYGROUP: 8/24: When introduced off leash to dogs, Polo keeps mostly to self. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Polo would not allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/22/17 During his initial medical exam, Polo was tense, lunging, and resisted handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Polo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Polo’s previous owner reported that he was lunging and snapping at her and her grandchildren, as well as the discomfort with handling Polo displays at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, as well as snapping at people in the care center, the behavior department recommends Polo be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Polo to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Polo to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Polo presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Polo’s previous owner reported that he lunges and snaps at her and her grandchildren. In the care center, he has displays growling and snapping when uncomfortable. It is important to always go slow and give Polo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Polo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Polo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Polo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
