11/02/16 18:51 Basic Information: Polo is a four year old boxer who was surrendered due to him biting a family member. Socialization: Around strangers Polo is friendly, outgoing and plays exuberantly with adults and children. Polo has lived with children ages 8 and 10 years old, around them he is relaxed and playful. Polo has never been around other dogs or cats so it is unknown how he will react to them. Behavior: Polo has bitten one person and is not bothered by loud sounds. Polo isn’t bothered by someone touching his food/ bowl while he is eating, takes a treat away or a toy away. Polo is friendly when someone pushes/pulls him off of the furniture, holds/restrains him, disturbs him while he is resting/sleeping, gives him a bath, or brushes his coat. Polo’s previous owner did not attempt to trim his nails so it is unknown how he will react to those events. If an unfamiliar person approaches Polo’s family or home he will be friendly toward them. For a New Family to Know: Polo is described as: friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable with a very high activity level. When at home Polo will follow his owner around and doesn’t like to play with toys. Polo was kept indoors mostly and was fed both wet and dry food. Polo is house trained and rarely has any accidents. Polo knows the command sit and enjoys running in the park. Polo pulls lightly on a leash. When off leash Polo will wander some but will come when called. Intake Behavior: Polo was handling by his owner during intake but had a loose body and was very calm around staff who he would occasionally sniff.

Due to his shelter observations in conjunction with known history, the behavior department believes Polo is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/03/16 During his initial medical examination, Polo does not tolerate any forms of handling and displays all appropriate warning signals indicating his uncomfortability. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Polo has attempted to snap multiple times during his stay at our care centers, for this reason along with known history, we believe Polo would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Polo has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling; any form of direct touch may result in a fearful bite. It is recommended that Polo be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Polo to new and unfamiliar situations.)
