05/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
4/23 SAFER: Polo previously lived with 1 adult, another dog and children ages 4 and under. The owner stated Polo is relaxed around them but doesn’t play because he’s sleeping most of the time; he also lived with another Pit-Bull (female) that he was playful with. The owner describes Polo as independent. The owner mentioned Polo is house trained, has a low activity level and well behaved when home alone. At intake it was reported Polo was very sweet and affectionate, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Polo came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Polo was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Polo was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Polo appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns on the aggression assessment. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog licks, then turns away. 5/2 update: Polo got along well with another dog in his previous home, however he showed some concerning behaviors toward the helper dog in playgroup. Based upon this behavior, described in the GroupBehavior entry, we recommend an experienced adopter.
04/24/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Polo approaches the gate with a high energy lunge, barking and pacing. Due to this behavior he was muzzled before being introduced. Once inside the pen Polo charges the helper dog and muzzle punches her repeatedly. The interaction was ended. 5/2 update: Based upon Polo’s response to the helper dog when brought to playgroup, we recommend an experienced adopter who can keep Polo and the dogs around him safe and comfortable while addressing any underlying anxiety through positive reinforcement-based behavior modification and counterconditioning should concerns arise in his new home.
