07/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/1/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/3/17 Toy: 4. Dog bares teeth (not guarding, at hand). Summary: In the assessment room, a person reached towards Pollywag to pet her. Pollywag snapped at her hand, so the handling portion of the assessment was not conducted. During toy, she bared teeth when the assessment hand came near her. After the toy was removed, she again teeth at the assessment hand so this was not a guarding behavior. PLAYGROUP: Pollywag has not been completely comfortable interacting with dogs in the care center, and actively avoids approach. The behavior department recommends allowing Pollywag time to decompress outside the care center before introductions to unfamiliar dogs. Future follow up should be conducted while supervised, at a slow pace. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Pollywag had a relaxed body and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During her initial medical exam, Pollywag showed teeth and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Pollywag so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a low level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Pollywag is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Pollywag has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Pollywag has bared teeth and snapped when fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Pollywag the option to walk away from any social interaction. Pollywag should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Pollywag’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Pollywag would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
