08/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Having no clue what her name means, I googled it to find out that Polgara is a sorceress in a fantasy novel. Let’s go with that, as Polgara is definitely a sorceress willing to work her magic to win your heart! Ready and anxious to come out for a walk, she potties as soon as we’re out the door, and we’re off to the park. Poly (for short) pulls on the leash, so will benefit from some leash training, seems to love people, happy to meet everyone who wanted to meet her, takes treats gently, didn’t mind being tethered for pictures, and enjoys a good snuggle. Poly pulls excitedly towards other dogs we pass, so will need some training to learn appropriate behavior. And because she loves treats, should be easy to work with using positive reinforcement. A tiny peanut in a gleaming black coat, with ears that reach to the sky, a big smile and twinkling eyes, Poly has a big personality, and is hoping for a new person or family with whom to share lots of exercise and love.
08/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Polgara came to the care center as a stray so we have no history of her in a home. Upon intake, she had a loose body. For her relief walk, Polgara pulls some on leash and was a reactive to other dogs, barking and lunging at passing dogs. Once in the assessment room, she appeared friendly and social. Her eyes are averted during Look, body soft, tail wagging. For Sensitivity, Polgara had a soft body, and she was panting, tail wagging, ears back. During Tag, she was playful and jumped on the assessor once softly. She gently pulled back her paw on both Squeeze attempts. She was playful with the Toy and easily relinquished it. When approaching another dog on leash at the care center, Polgara quickly runs at the dog barking, tail high, body stiff. Due to her reactivity around other dogs, the Behavior Team recommends that Polgara be placed in an Experienced home. As she has no known history with children, an in depth interaction is recommended for any children in the home. Polgara will need daily physical exercise, such as walks and runs, and mental stimulation, such as Kongs and other puzzle toys. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. She jumps once softly on the assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Dog to Dog: When approaching another dog on leash at the care center, Polgara quickly runs at the dog barking, tail high, body stiff.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Polgara runs away from approach and corrects play. It has been observed tha Polgara barks at othr dogs and lunges toward them while on leahs. Polgara arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. The behavior team feels that Polgara would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home, before following up on his behavior around them outside the care center environment.
