07/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Plutonium A1119031 KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/19/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/23/17 While Plutonium has allowed some handling in the care center, he has been observed to escalate quickly to growling and snapping; out of concern for his stress levels, a handling assessment will not be completed at this time. PLAYGROUP: When introduced off leash to dogs, Plutonium mostly keeps to himself and does not approach. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/19/17 Upon intake, Plutonium was tense and growled and lunged at the counselor through a crate; he was unable to be safely handled. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/20/17 During his initial medical examination, Plutonium appeared tense and bared teeth; he tolerated minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Plutonium displays a low energy level in the care center; we cannot be certain of his behavior in a new home environment though recommend daily mental and physical stimulation. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Plutonium has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Plutonium has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Plutonium the option to walk away from any social interaction. Plutonium should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Plutonium’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Plutonium may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Plutonium escalates quickly to snapping, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Plutonium needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Plutonium as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
