05/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I am still to understand what plunky or plunkie really means. Yes, we do have a lovely dame named Plunkie here at the care center and regardless of the meaning of her name, she is an absolute treasure. Plunkie and Mama are with us as their owners could not care for their pets anymore. They brought them up nicely, adding a personal touch to their “good doggies” genes and made them wonderful family pets. Plunkie is a pretty brindley gal, well dressed, healthy looking and the perfect weight. A bit shy at first and laying at the back of her kennel, she opens up after a short time in the yard. She is very well mannered, her moves are soft, she walks beautifully on the leash, comes when called and sits on command. Just like Mama, a little Maltese, she loves treats and will jump or sit for them. According to her former owner, Plunkie is house trained but would also use wee wee pads laid in the apartment hallway. Dogs, big and small, are met uneventfully, Plunkie not paying attention to the barking ones. She is a lady and well above this nonsense. She is friendly and affectionate, happy to be caressed and hugged. I love her beautiful smile and shiny amber eyes. Plunky comes with excellent comments from her previous owners, good with children and other pooches, welcoming of strangers, playful, well behaved when alone in the house and free of handling issues. That is what we want to hear when we come to adopt a dog. Plunkie is a very likable gal, a family dog who lost her family and dreams of starting all over again with a new one, show her skills and be a wonderful forever best friend. Plunky is at the Manhattan Care Center.
05/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Plunkie walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Plunkie was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Plunkie was not interested in toys. Plunkie was surrender to us. Her previous owner describes Plunkie as playful, affectionate and friendly with a high activity level. Around strangers, Plunkie is friendly around people. She had lived with a 13 year old child; she is relaxed and playful with the child and other adults in the home. She also lived with others dog a seven years old Labrador and Mama A1071945, they all got along very well. She is not bothered when you take their food bowl, treat, or toy away”. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Plunkie is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Plunkie is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When Plunkie is off leash with other dogs she is nervous and tries to avoid the other dog. She corrected the approach of the helper dog by growling at him when he came to close to her.
05/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Plunkie has been nervous and avoidant during off leash interaction with other dogs. The same behaviors have been observed when Plunkie interacts with both males and females. The behavior department feels that Plunkie may be most comfortable if given tim to acclimate in a new environment before introducing her to other dogs. Previous owner cites that Plunkie lived with other dogs, both large and small, and “they all got along very well”. When off leash with other dogs, Plunkie is nervous and avoidant of interaction. She offers correction whenever approached by the male greeter. 5/4 update: Plunkie is nervous and ignores interaction. 5/5 update: Plunkie offers a few sniffs, and begins to bark when sniffed by her rear. 5/6 update: Plunkie ignores interaction.
