04/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sometimes sweet, sometimes zesty, but always succulent and yummy, that’s our Plum. Joining us with her three housemates due to an emergency situation, Miss Plum sees me and barks, letting me know that a walk would be most appreciated. Easy to leash, we’re out the door quickly, Miss Plum using the ‘facilities’ the moment we’re outside. All of that important stuff being done, we’re off to the park, Plum wagging her tail as we walk. She’s lovely on leash, has a great smile, poses for pictures like a super model, and enjoys some treats as a reward. Once she knows I have treats, I’m her new best friend, and some kisses, hugs and lots of tail wags show her appreciation. Plum looks like she’s been a mom several times, but is ready to settle down, no longer to breed, but just enjoy life as a pampered pet as she should be. She’s still figuring out this change in her life, but is ready to welcome the next change as a new best friend.
04/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
4KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/20/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/23/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Plum displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment and was social throughout. PLAYGROUP: Plum has shown interest in greeting other dogs in the care center, and has been observed to solicit by mounting other dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Plum and resident dogs who may be tolerant of the behaviors observed on Plum, should they occur in a home environment. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/20/17 During her initial medical exam, Violet was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Plum so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Plum has been observed to react to other dogs when on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Plum may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
