Behavior during intake Piffinton was nervous and stiff body when he came in he got a little more comfortable as time went on but when we tried to leash him he reacted and began to lunge and bark. We had the owner leash, collar and walk him over to the run because he continued to bark and lunge at others through the kennel.
08/30/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s hard being a ‘senior’, we’re set in our ways, used to doing things with people we know, have a pattern, sleep in a certain bed, and when all that changes we can be a bit cranky. I get it, Piff, I’m the same way. A proud member of the ‘frosted face club’ at 10 yo, Piff was surrendered by his family as they are moving where he’s not welcome. Piff is quiet in his kennel watching me go back and forth. Outside, going potty is his first priority, he’s great on leash, and in the park we head to the water fountain and Piff stands up and drinks right from the fountain! Piff is a fan of butt scratches and will position himself perfectly for optimum ease, sits for treats and takes them gently, and rewards me with a great smile. He loves to cuddle and sit close to his person, sneaking in an occasional kiss. We’re told that he’s calm and respectful with strangers, gentle when playing with adults and children, isn’t a fan of kitties, barks when he’s nervous and doesn’t guard his things. Piff enjoys playing with balls, is housetrained, knows ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘stay’. Piff has a nice spry walk, doesn’t bother the squirrels that come near, ignores other dogs, and sat next to me when I sat to take some notes. I enjoyed my time with this debonair old man, a gentle soul and doing the best he can in this strange new place. Piff is looking for a retirement home in which to spend his golden years and is hoping to find it quickly. We’re hoping right along with him.

At this time, the behavior department recommends allowing Piffinton a period of decompression before immediate introductions to unfamiliar dogs. Future introductions should be conducted on a slow, one on one basis to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Piffinton had a tense body. When he was attempted to be leashed, he lunged and barked. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/22/17 During his initial medical exam, Piffinton was tense, allowing minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His owner describes Piffinton as having a medium level of energy which matches what we have seen at the care center. Piffinton is an older, social dog who solicited petting from handlers.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below) _X_No cats – Owner reports a concerning level of intensity toward cats, no further details given in regards to context. Piffinton may do best in a home without resident cats or where he may come into contact with cats on walks. Potential challenges: _X_Kennel presence – Piffinton was difficult to remove from his kennel, avoiding the leash but warmed up with treats and moving slowly with a soft, gentle voice. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Piffinton may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and only recommend Force-free, reward based positive reinforcement when exposing Piffinton to new environments.
