A volunteer writes: If this is what “middle age” looks and feels like, I want in!! At 7 years old, Pierogi is fun, lively, playful and snuggly. If we hadn’t been told he’s 7 by the only family he’s ever known, then I just wouldn’t believe it. Surrendered due to NYCHA restrictions, we’re told that he plays hard and loves well. He’s described as affectionate, doesn’t guard his things, playful, mostly housetrained, and prefers to spend his time with people vs being alone. Pierogi was shy for the first few minutes of our time together, but got super friendly quickly, was soft and wiggly with a tail that wagged a mile a minute. He’s pretty good on leash, showed off his housetraining skills, got the zoomies off leash in the pen (so cute!) and rolls in for petting. Pierogi poses for photos like a pro, showing off his sit before I ask, and he’s so good looking I’m sure his family snapped a lot of pics during their time together. If you’re looking for a lively and fun partner, a reason to get up in the morning and begin your day, an exercise buddy who won’t let you be a couch potato but also knows the value of some good cuddling, then Pierogi is your man. Come meet him today!! Another volunteer writes: What a great dog! It’s that simple. He’s great looking, rocks his bowtie and knows it — see him sit with a little smile on his face, like he knows this is what he’s meant for. In addition to posing like a rockstar, he LOVES playing with toys, amusing himself with tossing a plush toy, pouncing, running with it and having the best time. He’s an awesome playful affectionate dog looking for a new home in which to settle and love his person. Ask to meet him today.
01/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Spent time with a two year old who he played roughly with, jumping on the child. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Mostly housetrained. Energy level/descriptors: Previous owner described Pierogi as affectionate, playful, and excitable with a very high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/10/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up and grabs leash. Settles easily at end. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Pierogi displayed no behavioral concerns on his assessment. He did display a high amount of energy and would benefit from daily physical exercise, such as runs, walks, and play, and mental stimulation, such as Kongs and puzzle toys. PLAYGROUP: Pierogi engages briefly in interaction and play with polite dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Pierogi and respectful resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/10/17 During his initial medical exam Pierogi allowed handling. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 1/12/17 While Pierogi is social and affectionate outside the kennel, his presence in the kennel has been challenging. We are uncertain whether his barking is due to frustration or is attention-seeking, but with unfamiliar people he has also shown signs of fear (whale eye, lip raise, lunging). He seems to do this only with new people; with his familiar caretakers he remains loose and excited to go for a walk. This is improving slowly with the use of positive reinforcement (treats) but prevents him from moving into adoptions. Once motions to open the kennel are made, Pierogi softens and shows more social behavior. We believe the kennel environment is detrimental to his behavioral health and recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience)
Potential challenges: _X_ Kennel presence: While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Pierogi may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
