I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 10/15/2016 from NY 11235, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY. I came in with Group/Litter #K16-078032.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/16/16 During his initial medical examination, Pico appeared nervous, tolerating minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: ENC _X_No children (under 13) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling (See known history; Pico may benefit best from routine walks, scheduled feedings as well as incorporating a crate to aid in a housebreaking process.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Pico has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Pico easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)

10/15/16 12:46 Pico is a male pomeranian mix. He was surrendered due to owner moving out of state to a place that does not accept pets. Pico is described as friendly around strangers and will engage in gentle play. He was around teenagers and is described as relaxed and playful ,he will engage in gentle play. He lived with another small breed dog Pico and is described as tolerant, client stated he would engage in somewhat rough play with the other dog and they would often play fight. Pico was fed Alpo wet food twice a day. He was walked once a day and is used to off leash walks. He will stay close by when off leash. He is not bothered when his food is touched while eating. Client stated Rico would have accidents indoors daily. Client placed newspaper around the home and stated he would not urinate on the paper. Upon intake Pico sniffed cousnelor and had a tense body, he quickly closed his mouth and back away from cousnelor when scanning. Cousnelor used bedding to try to pick up Pico, he growled and cousnelor did not collar.

Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Pico is described as friendly and will engage in gentle play with strangers Other notes: Upon intake Pico sniffed the counselor and had a tense body, he quickly closed his mouth and back away from cousnelor when scanning, he growled the counselor did not collar. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/18/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff; with whale eyes and lip licks his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently pulls out body tense with his mouth closed. Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Pico was uncomfortable throughout the assessment, he showed no social behavior and at times would become stiff. PLAYGROUP: Pico was brougth in as a stray with another small male dog.
