SAFE 10/21/17
Hello, my name is Picasso. My animal id is #8967. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 05-Oct-2017.
Picasso 8967 is at risk for a respiratory illness (CIRDC). Behaviorally, he has been tense but tolerant of handling in the care center. He came in as a stray so we have no known history of his behavior in his previous home. Due to his timidity with his shelter caretakers we recommend an adopter with some previous dog experience, who will allow Picasso to warm up to his new home and new family at his own pace.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: if Picasso had a personal ad, it would look something like this: Picasso, single tan dog, is seeking a forever family. Must enjoy a dog in bow ties, and having a dog the size of a 5-year-old in your lap. Regular scratches behind the ears and bones to chew on are mandatory. In return Picasso can offer you lifelong companionship, loyalty, and love. Picasso’s other hobbies include: eating grass, pushing his butt on to the nearest person’s hands to get lots of scratches above the tail, Looking at other dogs as they pass and trying to decide if he likes them or not, and chasing balls but not usually bringing them back to you. Picasso is angel on the leash and seems to be house trained. Please come and meet him at the Brooklyn ACC today!

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Date of intake:: 10/5/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 10/7/2017
Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.
Paw squeeze 1:: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff.
Flank squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Flank squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: Picasso was social and tolerant but became a bit tense when paw squeeze was conducted.
Summary (1):: When off leash at the Care Center, Picasso is social and greets the female dog with a soft body. He is slightly sexually motivated-genital licking, but does not mount. Picasso was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Picasso be placed in a home with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. 10/6: Picasso is sexually motivated-persistent genital licking- with a novel female but did listen to handler interruptions briefly and explores the pens. 10/10: Today Picasso was more relax, and spent most of his time exploring the pens. He occasionally checks in with the other dogs. 10/17-19: Picasso returned to group after recovering from surgery and met a nervous female dog. He mostly kept to himself, briefly greeting her, before exploring his surroundings.
Date of intake:: 10/5/2017
Summary:: He displayed whale eyes towards the counselor with his head low.
Date of initial:: 10/7/2017
Summary:: A bit tense but tolerant of handling.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Picasso may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: The behavior department recommends allowing Picasso to approach his potential new adopters at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Picasso to new and unfamiliar situations.
