A volunteer writes: How do you spell great family pet? P-h-o-e-n-i-x!!! Rescued from abandonment 8 years ago, this gorgeous, young-at-heart lady has been living the good life with her brother and AC&C alum, Patch (A0780552), in a loving home ever since. They’re well-fed, well-trained and just the happiest dogs you could hope to meet and it must be devastating for both them and their little human siblings (a baby and a 5 year old) to lose the only family they’ve ever known. Phoenix loves to go out exploring, quickly doing her business before snuffling through the fallen leaves with glee and she meets other pups with a big smile and a wagging tail, always happy to make new four-legged friends…as long as they’re not cats! She sits on command, takes treats nicely and we’re told she loves chew bones too and has no problems sharing her toys or food or even taking a bath! Phoenix is affectionate, gentle and tolerant when interacting people of all ages and of course, she just loves playing with Patch, especially off-leash in the yard. I simply can’t say enough good things about this dynamic duo and whether you adopt Phoenix as part of your own pack or go for double the fun by welcoming both her and Patch as a ‘package deal’, you will not be disappointed. Proven family-friendly dogs don’t come along every day so hurry in and scoop up this adorable pittie Princess while you can, Phoenix will be waiting with open arms!
07/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Phoenix came into our center along with another similarly sized dog due to owner’s health issues. It is reported she lived with a newborn and a 5 year old child, respectful and gentle. Owner reports Phoenix will bark and growl at cats. It is stated Phoenix is not bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. Phoenix is reportedly housetrained to use the bathroom outside. She allowed all handling during intake. Phoenix pulled moderately on leash during her relief walk, barking and appearing anxious. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted. Phoenix stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wag. She was distracted during Tag game, focused on the exit, barking. Phoenix pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed minimal interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment, owner reports she enjoys playing with chew bones. Phoenix approached the helper dog whining and barking, investigated and then turned away. The Behavior Team feels Phoenix would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit from the company of another resident dog. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on exit, barking Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, whining and barking, investigates and then turns away.
08/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
8/5: When off leash with other dogs Phoenix is anxious and uncomfortable. She briefly greets then walks away, eventually re-approaching, this time tense, and begins to bark in the helper dogs face. Phoenix lived in a home with a large, male dog almost her entire life; the owner reports they played exuberantly with each other. Phoenix appears to have anxiety in the shelter, so the behaviors seen here may not translate to the home. The behavior recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Phoenix into a home with other other dogs as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new environment before introducing her to any resident dogs.
