07/01/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/01/16 11:46 Basic Info: Phoenix A1079538 is a 3yr old yellow brindle & white female AMPBT mix who was bought off of someone selling puppies 3yrs ago and is being surrendered due to neighbor conflict. She was last seen by a veterinarian in the summer of 2015 and currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Phoenix is shy for a few minutes. She’s lived with children ages 2months, 5months & 5yrs old and was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful with them, her & the 5yr old loved to wrestle and where ever the babies are Phoenix is keeping an eye on them. If someone is holding the babies and moves Phoenix moves along with them. She’s the same with the adults in the home. Phoenix hasn’t lived with other animals but is usually tolerant of the smaller “yappy” dogs in the building. However three weeks ago a Shih Tzu ran up to Phoenix barking and nipping at her paws with Phoenix trying to get away and ignoring them but after several minutes Phoenix snapped at the Shih Tzu who received a puncture wound according to the Shih Tzu’s owner but Phoenix’ owner didn’t see it. Phoenix hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal prior to this incident. Behavior: Phoenix isn’t bothered by the following: having her food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being brushed, being bathed or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. She gets her nails trimmed at the vets (which she is well behaved for). If someone approaches the home/family member Phoenix will ignore them. For A New Family to Know: Phoenix is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable & independent with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes how excellent she is with the kids. Phoenix enjoys playing. She enjoys squeaky, rope, ball toys and games of fetch, chase, wrestling & tug. Phoenix is mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps anywhere & is walked 4-5x a day where she pulls lightly on her leash at times. Phoenix eats wet & dry Purina Dog Chow 3x a day. She is house broken and well behaved in the home. Intake Behavior: Phoenix gave me “whale eye” when I attempted to approach her with the scanner. Due to her demeanor her owner assisted with collaring, scanning (-) and taking her picture where she posed with an over the shoulder pose. Phoenix then walked into the kennel on her own once she spotted the dog bowl. A few minutes later I passed her kennel and she began wagging her tail and whining.
07/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Phoenix is just as breathtaking and miraculous as her namesake, a brindled beauty with the sweet demeanor of a genuine family dog and the great track record to prove it. You couldn’t find a more people-friendly pup than she and we’re told she loves to play with her 5-year-old human sibling (even wrestling!), keeps vigilant watch over ‘her’ two babies, likes messing around with all kinds of toys and enjoys taking 4-5 walks each day. Phoenix is a great sharer of both her heart and her stuff and it’s no surprise to read she doesn’t complain when her food, treats or toys are moved around, is cool with being brushed, bathed or even having her nails trimmed and that as loyal as she is to her family, you’ll never see her guarding them when strangers approach. She LOVES her ball with a passion that sadly its fabric can’t withstand for long, but she’ll return to my side even once her prize is ragged with tooth holes, nuzzling in, nudging my leg and then dropping it on the bench beside me for another throw. A bit of a puller on leash (So much to see! So much to sniff!), she’s just as house trained as we’re told and takes care of her business right away and as we make our way round the block she greets fellow dogs with polite tail wags and a soft body. Phoenix has had a ‘run-in’ with an aggressive small dog in the past and she’s much more of a ‘people dog’ than a ‘dog’s dog’ so might prefer a home where she can be the only star in the spotlight. A good girl who’s spent her whole life and given her whole heart to being the perfect family pet, Phoenix is looking to continue that legacy of gentleness and caring in a forever home and she’s ready to make her new people proud. Will yours be the lucky one she chooses?
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Phoenix came into our center as an owner surrender on 7/1/2016. It is reported she lived with children ages 2 month, 5 months, and 5 years, gentle, playful. She has not lived with other animals, and is reportedly tolerant of smaller dogs in the building, but owner reports an incident where a shihtzu ran up and nipped at Phoenix’s feet, in response she bit and caused a puncture wound. Owner reports Phoenix isn’t bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. She is reportedly housebroken and well behaved in the home. Phoenix is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable & independent with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes how excellent she is with the kids. During intake, Phoenix was uncomfortable, gave whale eye when approached by the scanner, so owner assisted with handling. She went into her kennel easily. Phoenix walked well on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. Phoenix stood still and accepted the touch for Sensitivity item, body soft, ears back, mouth closed. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, soft, settled easily at end. Phoenix did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Phoenix kept a firm grip on Toy, body loose. Owner reports Phoenix enjoys playing. She reportedly enjoys squeaky, rope, ball toys and games of fetch, chase, wrestling & tug. When off leash with other dogs, Phoenix is cautious and only offers one sniff before avoiding. The Behavior Team feels Phoenix would do well with an Experienced adopter. Any other dogs in the home should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip, body loose Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Phoenix is cautious and only offers one sniff before avoiding.07/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Phoenix has shown discomfort in the presence of other dogs in our care, and has shown the potential to escalate without clear provocation. Due to these observations made on Phoenix, the behavior team feels that she will be most comfortable as the only dog in a future residence. Phoenix arrived as an owner surrender, who cited only that she has been ‘tolerant’ of animals, and also cited that she had a history of ‘snapping’ at a smaller dog without much other information provided. 7/3: When off leash with other dogs, Phoenix is cautious and only offers one sniff before avoiding. 7/5 update: Phoenix initially enters the pen and stands to herself without approaching the dogs. When another dog walks by, without clear provocation she lunges at them and tries to bite him. 7/7: Phoenix places her paws on the helper dog’s shoulders, tense, and bares teeth in his face. 7/8 update: Phoenix greets a female dog appropriately but is tense once introduced. She follows behind her and then stiffens and jumps on her shoulders. Because she has escalated without provocation before, she is removed from the pen. 7/11: Phoenix is muzzled for today’s interaction. She again follows behind the other dog, stiff and jumping on their shoulders.
