A volunteer writes:
Smokey, a young adorabull , was left with us as his family moved to a place not allowing pets…He came with no “label” but his looks and demeanor do not need any prior comment…He simply is a good lad, really great looking, friendly, sociable and very nicely behaved. Smokey waits by his door, his small almond shaped Bull Terrier eyes full of hope and a large smile lighting up his face. Leashing him is no problem. Walking him is a dream. He is a “sniffer” , though but I guess, he is trying to situate him self in his new territories. Smokey does his business on the way without marking. He enjoys caresses and a scratch on his head. He does not mind being tethered for the photos session and he sits at once on command. Treats, he likes them and takes them gently from my hand. Such a well behaved young man!! Smokey seems to like other dogs met on the way, wagging peacefully his tail and appreciates his time in playgroups with is peers. Definitively a plus for his breed! Smokey is a very lovable little guy, well nourished, cute, welcoming and a gem for the connoisseurs of the breed. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Smokey so wants to be your friend.
KNOWN HISTORY:
Neutered, Owner surrender
Previously lived with: Adults
Behavior toward children: Allowed them to approach and pet him
Behavior toward dogs: Playful when interacting with them on leash.
Behavior toward cats: N/A
FG/RG: None reported
Bite history: None reported
Housetrained: Yes
Energy level/descriptors: High energy
Other notes: May play bite when he becomes excited. Smokey will pull hard on a leash. He is accustomed to being walked at least twice a day and will be very energetic if he doesn’t get enough time outside.
ASSESSMENT:
Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 2. Dog runs, jumps, plays, does not settle at end, mouths assessor with moderate pressure
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Difficult to position. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed
Toy 1: 2. Dog keeps a firm grip on Toy, not stiff
Summary: Smokey did not settle easily after Tag game; mouthed assessor’s arm with moderate pressure. Owner reports he may ‘play bite’.
PLAYGROUP:
Smokey’s previous owner cites that “When he notices other dogs outside, he becomes very excited and starts wagging his tail and barking. Once he is allowed to approach them, he immediately tries to get them to play with him.”. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Smokey engages in bouncy play with the female greeter. At times, he becomes a bit overwhelmed and will cease play when it becomes too exuberant. The behavior team feels that Smokey may be adopted to a home with another dog. He has not been cited to have lived with other animals, so in-home behavior with other dogs is unknown.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During his initial medical examination, Smokey readily allowed all handling.
